Both the top seeds in the boys and girls singles were denied the title by lower ranked players at the World Junior Badminton Championships in Guwahati, India.
Indonesian Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah was beaten 10-15, 11-5 by China’s Liu Yang Ming Yu in the boys final. The defeat meant that Indonesia will exit this year’s edition without a single title.
India’s Tanvi Sharma was hoping to emulate Saina Nehwal’s win in 2008 in the girls singles, but she was denied by Thailand’s Anyapat Phichitpreechasak.
Anyapat won the title comfortably 15-7, 15-12 to become the third Thai players to win the girls singles. Ratchanok Intanon won the title three times in 2009, 2010 and 2011 while Pitchamon Opatniputhwon the title two years ago.
China, who had won the team event title, that preceded the individual competitions, win two more titles in the boys and girls doubles.
Tan Ke Xuan-Wei Yue Yue gunned down third seeds Low Zi Yu-Noraqilah Maisarah of Malaysia 15-13, 19-17 for the girls doubles title. Zi Yu had also settled for the silver last year partnering Dania Sofea Zaidi.
