Philippines bore the brunt of the Thai attacking prowess as they succumbed to a 1-5 defeat in their Group B ASEAN Under-17 Football Championship at the Gelora Joko Samudro in Gresik.
In another Group B match Laos and Myanmar toiled to a scoreless draw that hardly helped their semi-final hopes of progressing to the semi-finals.
The Thais raced to a 3-0 lead at the break after Worawit Boonthaokaeo had put them ahead in the ninth minute against the Philippines. The goal was followed by strikes from Pattarawee Deebansok (29th) and Thodsadon Promsiridet (40th).
Sathaporn Phoojomjit put Thailand further in front in the 62nd minute before an own goal from Frank Beckham Bacara four minutes later put them comfortably in front at 5-0.
Aarran Thomas Long picked up a consolation goal for the Philippines in the 79th minute.
Group A of the competition will begin their campaign later today with Vietnam taking on Malaysia and Indonesia squaring off against Timor Leste.
Cambodia had drawn 0-0 in their Group C match against Singapore on the opening day and will play group favourites Australia on Tuesday.
