Katarzyna Wegrzyn
Making her big breakthrough on the senior stage, Katarzyna Wegrzyn clinched WTT Feeder Lille women’s singles title upstaging No.3 seed Natalia Bajor 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 4-11, 11-5 in the final.
Wegrzyn, whose previous best finish on the WTT Feeder Series came two years back at WTT Feeder Biella 2023 where she reached the semifinals, was electric right from the off in Lille.
In the round of 32, the 25-year-old Pole blew the title race wide open as she knocked top seed Li Yu-Jhun out of contention in dramatic fashion 12-10, 16-14, 5-11, 6-11, 11-6. Katarzyna then followed up with an emphatic 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 victory over twin sister Anna Wegrzyn, claiming family bragging rights.
She then powered on to the semifinals, saving match point deep in the fourth before kicking on to defeat Britt Eerland 9-11, 13-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-8. Then, when it mattered most, Katarzyna brought the fireworks to the party, lighting up Palais Saint Sauveur with one last hurrah as she beat Bajor to the title.
Locking up his first title only a few months back in Gdansk, it hasn’t taken Wim Verdonschot long to back it up with another, claiming the men’s singles plaudits in Lille.
The German had to work hard for it, needing all five games to come through his closing three encounters. In the final itself, Verdonschot stood on the precipice of defeat, facing Championship Point at 9-10 down in the decider.
But he’d remarkably turn the tide, denying Jules Rolland his moment in the sun with Verdonschot stealing it late on 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 12-10.
While Rolland would fall short at the final step, he’d leave Lille with a title to his name, joining forces with Leo De Nodrest to strike men’s doubles glory. The pair defeated Martin Alegro-Adrien Rassenfosse 8-11, 11-8, 12-10, 11-3.
Li Yu-Jhun-Chien Tung-Chuan locked up the women’s doubles hardware defeating Nikole Arlia-Gaia Monfardini 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-7.
The mixed doubles title went to Marek Badowski-Zuzanna Wielgos after they defeated Wim Verdonschot-Marek Badowski 11-5, 9-11, 6-11, 11-2, 11-9.
