Third seeds Juan Lebrón-Leandro Augsburger took top seeds Arturo Coello-Agustín Tapia to three sets in Sunday’s Premier Padel Milan P1 final before losing out as Ariana Sánchez Fallada and Andrea Ustero Prieto wrapped up their fifth 2026 women’s title.
Lebrón-Augsburger were only contesting their fourth 2026 final, but showed no stage fright as they claimed the first set 6-4. The world’s best pair, though, regrouped to take the next two sets 6-3 6-2 for their 12th title of an emphatic season.
Coello, 24, said: “It’s a very, very difficult game. They’re a great team. They fought incredibly hard and played at an incredible level at the beginning of the first set and during part of the second. Today, we were lucky in the end and played an incredible final set.”
The men’s event saw fifth seeds Martín Di Nenno-Francisco Navarro dumped out in the Round of 16 with the top four seeds finding nobody in the way of their march towards Saturday’s semi-finals.
Coello-Tapia made light work of fourth seeds Franco Stupaczuk-Jon Sanz 6-4 6-3, Lebrón and Augsburger on the wrong end of a 6-0 bagel set to begin their last-four clash against second seeds Alejandro Galán-Fede Chingotto before they reset themselves to race through the next two sets 6-2 6-2.
The final was a chance for Lebrón to bag a third Milan title but, once Coello-Tapia had worked them out after the first-set surprise, they stepped up a gear for their fourth title in a row.
Tapia, 27, added: “At the beginning of the second set, I think the key moment was that game we managed to save: we ran, we fought, and it went our way.”
In the women’s draw, second seeds Bea González-Paula Josemaría Martín had an early fight for survival after an unseeded Spanish pair took the first set off them 7-6, only to rally back 6-3 6-2 for the win.
González-Josemaría benefitted from the retirement of sixth seeds Tamara Icardo Alcorisa-Claudia Jensen to make the last four as did the other three top seeds at a packed Allianz Cloud Arena.
Third seeds Sánchez-Ustero had won two out of the three previous events and they showed no mercy in their semi-final clash with top seeds Gemma Triay Pons-Delfina Brea Senesi as they needed just one hour and 14 minutes to send them packing 6-1 6-4.
González-Josemaría had no such trouble in their last-four clash against fourth seeds Claudia Fernández Sánchez-Martina Calvo Santamaria, reeling off a 6-2 7-6 win in one hour and 43 minutes.
Sunday’s final was a chance for the winner to take the number two spot in the FIP Race with the third seeds edging the first-set tiebreak 7-3 before closing out the title 6-3 in the second to hand Sánchez her 58th career title, equalling the record of Triay and Alejandra Salazar.
Ustero, 19, said: “I wasn’t feeling great in the first set, but the turning point was changing our attitude a little. I think it was when we started shouting and believing in ourselves. Luckily, I play alongside a world number one who keeps reminding me of all that.”
Sánchez, 29, added: “I’m very happy because we have to appreciate what we’re achieving. This was our third consecutive week competing. We’ve played other finals, and last week we finished pretty tired, but even so, the team came out strong, managed to rest and get ready to start another week.”
There is a much-needed break now for the elite players until the Kuwait Major runs from October 26-31.
