Despite two double bogeys in his first six holes on Sunday, 36-hole leader David Toms got up-and-down from a greenside bunker for birdie on No. 18 to win the Chubb Classic golf championships.
The 59-year-old earned his fifth win on PGA Tour Champions by one stroke over a trio of players – Boo Weekley, Michael Wright and defending champion Justin Leonard.
Toms finished with a a 203 total (67-63-73), finishing 13-under to move up to No. 2 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings ($296,500) behind Stewart Cink ($340,000).
Toms had opened his season with a T20 finish at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai last month.
Defending champion Leonard birdied two of his last five holes en route to a final-round 70. This is his fourth top-5 finish in his last six starts on PGA TOUR Champions, dating back to last season.
Weekley matched the low round of the day with bogey-free 67 to earn his best finish on PGA Tour Champions. His previous best finish was tied third at last year’s DICK’S Open.
As for Michael Wright he closed with 71 and earned his best finish on the Tour.
