Sprinter Salin Tort will be the sole Cambodian in action at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Final entry lists for the championships Tokyo sees more than 2200 athletes from almost 200 teams intending to compete at the National Stadium in Japan’s capital between 13-21 September.
Forty-one of the athletes who won individual gold medals at the 2023 edition in Budapest, 37 are entered to compete at the World Athletics championships.
World record-holders Faith Kipyegon (1500m), Karsten Warholm (400m hurdles), Yaroslava Mahuchikh (high jump), Mondo Duplantis (pole vault), Yulimar Rojas (triple jump) and Ryan Crouser (shot put) are among the defending champions heading to Tokyo, seeking to add to their global medal tally.
If US sprinter Noah Lyles repeats his triple gold feat from two years ago, he’d become just the fourth athlete in World Championships history to win nine gold medals.
Portuguese race walker Joao Vieira, selected for his 14th World Championships, is on course to break the record for the most World Championships appearances. Similarly, French discus thrower Melina Robert-Michon is set to equal the record number of World Championships appearances by a woman (11).
Twenty-seven-year-old Salin, who has a personal best of 11.33 in the 100m dash has been entered in the competition under the quota given to countries that have no qualified athletes in the championships.
The Cambodian is not expected to progress pass the first round, He is among the eight athletes in the race, who have yet to clock sub-11s times in the century dash.
At the SEA Games two years ago, Salin Tort clocked 11.38 and failed to get past the Heats.
