Justin Rose made 10 birdies and eight pars en route to a blistering 10-under 62 on the North Course at Torrey Pines to take the solo lead after the opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open.
Rose, who won at Torrey Pines in 2019, made five birdies on each side to card dueling 31s for a one shot lead ahead of Justin Lower, who sits at 9 under.
Rose could have gone even lower on Thursday. He missed a 3-footer for birdie at the par-5 ninth, his last hole of the day.
One of seven past champions in the field, Rose is a 2-time PGA Tour winner and most recently won the St. Jude Championship last year,
With eagles on No. 9 and No. 17 on the North Course, Lower recorded two eagles in his nine-under round to trail Rose.
Making his third start at the Farmers Insurance Open, Max Greyserman opened with an 8-under 64 tied in third with HIdeki Matsuyama.
Hideki Matsuyama, one of 10 major championship winners in the field is making his 13th consecutive appearance at the Farmers Insurance Open. His best finish here was T3 in 2019.
Seamus Power (T5/-7) recorded the low round on the South Course with a 7-under 65; birdied every par 3 on the South Course, marking the first player since Emiliano Grillo (2023/R1) to do so.
With a first-round 3-under 69 at the North Course, two-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open Brandt Snedeker (2012, 2016) has 38 rounds under par at this event, the most of any player since 2010 (next: 35/Keegan Bradley)
A struggling defending champion Harris English (T102/+1) posted a 1-over 73 at the South Course.
Making his first start in a non-major on the PGA Tour since the 2022 via the Returning Member Program, Brooks Koepka also struggled and with a 1-over 73.
