Only three South East Asian karatekas have qualified for the World Karate Championships to be held in Cairo from November 27-30.
A total of 24 athletes per category (288 athletes) have been confirmed till date. So far, 82 federations already have at least one qualified athlete.
There are still 8 places per category pending. Six of those will be awarded at the Qualification Tournament and two more via universality places.
Ironically, all three qualified exponents come from Malaysia and all three are female karatekas.
Lovely Anne Robberth will represent the nation in the Female Kata
Shahmalarani Chandran will compete in the women’s kumite below 50kg whileZakiah Adnan will compete in the women’s kumite below 61kg.
African powerhouses Algeria and Egypt have the most number of qualifiers for the world championships with 12 exponents each. Australia and Japan have 11 qualifiers respectively.
