Malaysia’s newly forged mixed doubles pairing of Jimmy Wong-Cheng Su Yin pulled off a stunning 23-21, 21-16 defeat of top seeded Feng Yanzhe-Huang Dongping of China at the Singapore Masters badminton championships.
Playing in only their second tournament together, they have achieved even what their higher ranking teammates have not achieved in beating the formidable Chinese duo in the first round of a major tournament.
In reality it was also only their second match at the international arena. They made their debut at the Malaysian Masters last week, losing with a first round exit at the hand of Danes Mathias Christiansen-Alexandra Boje.
“We are really happy with the result. In our first tournament, we didn’t perform that well but we tried to bounce back here and we managed to do it,” said Jimmy after the 43-minute upset.
They kept their nerves in a close first set battle before asserting control in the second.
“The main key was patience. we had to stay patient throughout while also being aggressive at the right moments,” he added.
Su Yin revealed their game plan was simply to stay calm rather than force the issue against the Chinese stars who have lost only three times to Malaysian pairs since teaming up in 2023.
The Malaysian youngsters will take on Chinese-Taipei’s Yang Po-Hsuan-Hu Liang Fang in the second round, The Taiwanese duo struggles past India’s Rohan Kapoor- Ruthvika Shivani Gadde 21-18, 22-20.
In the men’s single opening round clash, sixth seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei was beaten 21-19, 21-16 in a clash that lasted almost an hour.
Indonesian number one Putra Kusuma Wardani, the women’s singles fifth seed was beaten by Indian veteran P.V. Sindhu. The lanky Indian shuttler showed she was still a player to be reckoned with, taking 44-minutes to defeat Putri 21-17, 21-18.
