Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin not only won his maiden men’s singles title on the BWF World Tour but also becomes the first Malaysian to win the Vietnam Open crown in almost two decades.
Aidil upset top seeded Teh Jia Heng of Singapore 21-16, 21-14 in the final to emulate Mohamed Roslin, who won the title way back in 2007.
It was the world number 91 ranked players second win over Jia Heng in as many meetings.
Aidil’s only previous international victory was at the lower ranked Sri Lanka International Challenge in March last year.
The women’s singles title also went to a lower ranked player, with Thailand’s Sarunrak Vitidsarn claiming the title.
Sarunrak, the younger sister of former world champion Kunlavut Vitidsarn, defeated India’s third seeded Isharani Baruah 21-8, 21-15. Sarunrak,who had also beaten top seeded Tanvi Sharma in the semi-finals, was in imperious form as she carved out the win in just 34-minutes.
It was the 22-year-old Isharan’s second loss to the Thai shuttler, ranked 106th in the world. Isharani had met Vitidsarn after four years when they last played each other in India Junior International Grand Prix 2022 match.
