Top-seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty pulled out of the Swiss Open in Basel ahead of its quarterfinal clash after Satwiksairaj aggravated a right shoulder injury.
The duo’s withdrawal ensured an easy journey into the semi-finals for the Danish pair of Christian Faust Kjaer-Rasmus Kjaer.
Satwiksairaj-Chirag, had a poor outing at the recent All-England and had to endure a high-intensity 74-minute match on Thursday, prevailing 21-15 15-21 28-26 over Japan’s Hiroki Okamura-Kyohei Yamashita in the second round.
Also bowing out injured was the women’s singles third seeds Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan, who retired while trailing 6-11 to Taiwanese Lin Hsiang Ti.
Miyazaki will take on Thailand’s Supanida Katethong in the semi-finals.
Veteran Nozomi Okuhara held off her the challenge of younger Japanese compatriot Riko Gunji, 21-19 21-18; the former world champion will be up against top seed Putri Kusuma Wardani in the semi-finals.
In the women’s doubles, third seeds Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi of Japan were also shown the exit, losing 14-21, 14-21 to China’s Li Yijing-Wang Yisuo.
China dominated women’s doubles with three pairs making their way into the semifinals. Bulgarians Gabriela Stoeva-Stefani Stoeva will be in their path, with the Bulgarians beating Hu Ling Fang-Jheng Yu Chieh 21-13, 13-21, 21-9.
The mixed doubles competition sixth seeds Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi of Cina edging out the third seeded Indonesian pairing of Jafar Hidayatullah-Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu 21-19, 21-17 to move into the semi-finals.
China also have three pairs in the mixed doubles, while Indonesia’s hopes will be pinned on Amri Syahnawi-Nita Violina Marwah, who edged compatriots Adnan Maulana/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil 21-18, 20-22, 21-19 in a thriller.
Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, on the comeback trail from injury, made his first semifinal in 17 months after an hour-long battle against Tharun Mannepalli.
The Indonesian, who struggled all through 2025 and whose comeback was derailed by a back injury in January, had to come through the qualifying draw.
The world No.51 beat Zhu Xuan Chen, Wang Tzu Wei and Wang Zheng Xing before overcoming Mannepalli 21-19 19-21 21-13 to enter his first semifinal since the Hong Kong Open in September 2024. Ginting next faces Yushi Tanaka and will aim to make his first final since March 2024.
Ginting’s younger compatriot Alwi Farhan also made the semifinals in the top half, where he takes on top seed Li Shi Feng.
