Multiple ASEAN Para Games gold medalist Muhammad Ikhwan Ramli is in line for an unprecedented three titles at the Indonesian Para Badminton Championships in Solo.
Ikhwan has qualified for the finals of the WH1 men’s singles and doubles as well as the mixed doubles.
In the WH1 singles, Ikhwan qualified for the finals after defeating Yu-yu Ong of Chinese Taipei 21-11, 21-9. He will take on third seeded Shashank Kumar of India in the final.
The top seed Ikhwan will fancy his chances as he had beaten his final rival twice before, although both victories came two years ago at the Thailand Bahrain Para Badminton Championships.
He and partner Noor Azwan Noorlan stormed into the WH1-WH2 doubles final with a comprehensive 21-16, 21-6 defeat of Indonesia’s Supriadi-Agung Widodo.
They will play Indian second seeds Prem Kumar Ale-Abu Hubaida for the title.
Like in the singles, Ikhwan will also be in good stead to bag his second crown of the day. He and Noor Azwan hold a 3-2 career record against the Indians. Ikwan-Azwan have in fact beaten Prem-Abu in the last three meetings, including at the Spanish Para Badminton International March.
Ikhwan will partner Peru’s Pilar Jauregui in the WH1-WH2 mixed doubles final, after the duo defeated second seeds Shashank Kumar-Ammu Mohan 21-12, 21-12.
The scratch duo will take on top ranked Prem Kumar Ale-Alphia James of India in the final. On paper it may look an uphill task, but Ikhwan-Pilar had beaten the same Indian pair 21-13, 21-13 in the group matches two days ago.
If Ikhwan gets to live up to expectation, he will be n of the rare players to have won three titles at a single para badminton competition.
