Hong Kong emerged FIFA ASEAN Challenge Cup champions following a 2-0 defeat of Cambodia in the final on Saturday.
Matt Orr’s first half strike set the tone with Everton Camargo’s penalty before the hour-mark sealing the win for the East Asian side.
Hong Kong, China were the more progressive team from the outset, regularly advancing into dangerous positions, with dynamic winger Everton a persistent threat.
Cambodia defended stoutly for much of the opening period, though, displaying determination and spirit while posing a threat on the counter-attack.
Hong Kong, China finally broke through shortly before half-time. Sun Ming Him sent in a cross, which Orr converted with a superb left-footed finish.
It was 2-0 just before the hour-mark. Hong Kong, China were awarded a penalty following a VAR review, for a foul on Philip Chan by Meng Chheng. Everton stepped up to coolly slot home.
Cambodia kept battling hard and had chances to pull a goal back. Soknet Hav headed wide from a corner and fellow substitute Ty Sa shot fractions off target.
They continued to commit men forward in the game’s later stages but Hong Kong, China held firm to clinch the victory and the title.
