It was a great day in the rings for Cambodia at the Bahrain Asian Youth Games. Vuthy Chanton led three other Cambodian exponents through to the quarter-finals of the Muay competition
Vuthy Chanton was up against Bahrain’s Abdulla Sayed Alawi in the boys’ 45kg combat Last 16 tie. It was match that see-sawed but eventually went the Cambodian way, winning by the slimmest of margins 29-28. Vutyh will take on Uzbekistan’s Doston Abduvaliev in the quarter-finals today.
In the boys -51kg, Thorn Chantou got past Thailand’s Sirawich Poommithaworn and will take on Iranian Esmaeil Jafari in the boys’ -51kg quarter-finals.
In the boys’ -57kg round of 16, Khun Dimey was the other Cambodia to chalk up victory as he defeated Filipino Fernando Martin James 29-28. Khun will go up against UAE’s Khaleel Issam in the quarter-finals.
In the boys’ -60kg round of 16, Hem Mangsrun was also victorious in his bout, He carved out a 30-27 win over China’s Qian Sheng. Ahmad Rayan of Jordan stands in his way in the quarter-finals.
In the boys’ -54kg round of 32 bout, Visal Chhong earned an inspiring 30-27 victory over Suphak Shanthachaem of Thailand to move into the next round. He will fight Lebanon’s Bahar Din Khodor in the Last 16.
In the girls’ -45kg combat event, Ly Sreynuch was narrowly beaten in her round of 16 bout. She was edged out 26-30 by Thailand’s Chinno Khwanpitcha.
Elsewhere, Porn Sarapich will open his campaign in the quarter-finals of the boys’ -48kg against Iraqi Abdullah Osamah Hussein while Om Sreypenh will open up in the quarter finals of the girls’ -51kg against Hananeh Taghipoorheidari of Iran.
ATHLETICS
In the boys 100m heats, Reth Rayuth finished last in Heat 4 in a time of 12.21 and failed to advance. The heat was won by Chinese Taipei’s Huang Guan Yao, who was timed at 10.79.
BASKETBALL
The Cambodian 3×3 basketball team lost their opening Group C match 7-21 to Qatar. Heng Serey scored three points for the Cambodian side with Thal Udom and Heng Udom contributing two each.
Azan Yakan top scored for the Qatari side with nine points.
In their second match, the Cambodian trio overcame Maldives 19-15. Heng Srey was the star of the team, bagging nine points while Udom slammed seven for the Kingdom.
However, Thailand inflicted a second defeat on the national junior side with a 21-15 margin in their third match. Heng Serey’s nine point haul in the game was not good enough as the Thai side managed to counter with Apirach Boonsrang (7) and Thirakhun Thamngoen (6).
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
In the boys’ 50kg Modern MMA round of 16, Sok Devit was disqualified in his opening tie against Umar Shafirov of Tajikistan.
Tep Sreynich started her campaign in the girls’ 55kg Modern MMA against Takada Atsuhi of Japan. It was the Japanese exponent who prevailed with a submission (neck)
Also disqualified was Khorn Vichetcahntra in the girls’ 45kg Modern MMA quarter-finals in her bout against Filipina Charlie Ratcliff.
In the boy’s 55kg Modern MMA, also saw exit of Ry Keosomnang in the round of 16. Indonesia’s Himara Bumi Magani Abraar won the bout by submission (neck).
