After a dominant run through the bracket, Natus Vincere’s Luis Guadalupe “DarkAngel” Castillo Gomez emerged as the first FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves at EWC 26 champion, defeating Kenta “mi2ha4” Ichihara 5-1 in Saturday’s Grand Final.

The stoic DarkAngel, hailing from Mexico, was the only returning top-eight finisher from last year’s tournament to reach the final bracket. A Terry Bogard specialist, he has built his reputation around the iconic character in both FATAL FURY and The King of Fighters.
Sitting opposite him was Japan’s Kenta “mi2ha4” Ichihara, a rising star and Rock Howard specialist. Mi2ha4 earned his place in the Grand Final with a breakout run, eliminating legends including Akihito “SCORE” Sawada and Zheng “NaiWang” Yuqing along the way.
DarkAngel set the tone early, claiming the opening two sets 2-1 before a commanding 2-0 victory gave him a 3-0 lead in the best-of-nine. Mi2ha4 finally found his footing in the fourth set, taking it 2-1 to extend the series and keep his championship hopes alive.
The momentum shift was short-lived. DarkAngel, the DreamHack Birmingham 2026 runner-up and one of the world’s premier Terry Bogard specialists, answered with another hard-fought set to move within one victory of the title. Even the typically stoic veteran showed flashes of emotion as mi2ha4 continued to push him.
DarkAngel sealed the championship with a decisive 2-0 final set, completing a 5-1 Grand Final victory to become the first champion of the Esports World Cup 2026.
As the final set ended, DarkAngel’s trademark composure finally gave way. He slotted his key into the FATAL FURY trophy before lifting it high in celebration, soaking in the biggest victory of his career.
Speaking after the win, the FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves champion thanked his local fighting game community in Mexico. Their support helped fund his move from Guadalajara to Chihuahua, a pivotal step that made his rise through the competitive ranks possible. DarkAngel’s victory capped off a truly global competition, with the eight-player final bracket featuring competitors from six regions: the USA, China, Japan, Greece, Mexico, and Chinese Taipei.
Earlier in the day, Naoki “Nemo” Nemoto defeated Laggia 5-3 in the third-place match, ending both Japanese veterans’ EWC campaigns just shy of the Grand Final. Laggia, whom mi2ha4 has credited as the reason he began competing in FATAL FURY, narrowly fell 5-4 to his protégé in an emotional semifinal. Nemo, meanwhile, was eliminated by DarkAngel in a 5-3 semifinal, falling to the Mexican star’s signature Terry Bogard.
DarkAngel’s championship run earned him $250,000 in prize money and 1,000 EWC Club Championship Points for Natus Vincere. The victory gives Natus Vincere an early lead in the Club Championship standings. Runner-up Kenta “mi2ha4” Ichihara earned $130,000 and 750 Club Championship Points for Virtus.pro, keeping them close in the race.
