Cambodia opened their campaign at the ASEAN Under-17 boys championships with a goalless 0-0 draw against Singapore at the Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarja.
Group C favourites Australia thrashed a hapless Brunei 12-0 in their match earlier.
While it is only the opening day of the competition, the result is likely to deny either team a place in the semi-finals. Neither Cambodia nor Singapore are expected to defeat Australia while they have good chances against minnows Australia.
Only the top teams from the three groups will qualify for the semi-finals together with one best second placed team.
Second places teams will need to pick up at least six points to assure that they have a greater chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
Cambodia will now have to beat Brunei on Tuesday and the mighty Aussies in their final group matches to achieve that.
Australia showed their championships hopes as they imposed their dominance right after the opening whistle against Brunei.
They opened scoring in the third minute and led 4-0 at halftime. It was a massacre in the second half as Brunei conceded eight more in a one-sided second half.
Georgia Hassarti top-scored for the Aussies with five goals in the 3rd, 35th 56th, 58th and 81st minutes.
Braces from Corey Da Cruz (34th and 74th) and Achnoff Sayon (45th and 49th) together with goals from Oliver O-Carrol (31st) and Emile Katrib saw the Aussies romp home.
