France’s Clement Berthier clinched the men’s singles Class 8 Singapore Para Smash crown with a dominant display, beating Japan’s Hayuma Abe 11-7, 11-3, 11-4.
In the group stages earlier, Abe had put Berthier to the sword, winning in three games in a match where the Frenchman scored only 13 points.
But this match was only going one way, with Berthier taking the first game before going 10-0 up in the second. He sealed the win in fine style, scoring four on the spin for the title.
In the Women’s Singles Class 10 final, Chinese Taipei’s Tian Shiau Wen put in a stunning performance to take down Anja Handen 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 in less than 15 minutes.
The opening exchanges were close, with Handen saving two game points before succumbing in the first. The Swede was then leading in the second game before Shiau Wen hit five in a row to set up three game points.
Handen again saved two before Shiau Wen got over the line. Shiau Wen went ahead in the final game and didn’t look back, hitting five in a row without reply to seal the championship.
Running alongside Singapore Smash, the tournament was held in two stages, with the world’s best athletes first fighting it out in the group stage before competing in the knockout rounds.
