Australia started their Group C campaign of the ASEAN U19 Boys’ Football Championship on a high when they shattered the Philippines 10-0 at the Sumatera Utara Main Stadium in Deli Serdang.
Medin Memeti was on fire with five goals with his first coming off a penalty in the seventh minute.
He found the net four times in the 26th, 41st, 65th and 71st minutes.
A brace each each from Lawrence Wong (58th and 61st) and Mathias Macallister (70th and 82nd) and a penalty from Alexandro Nunes in the 64th minute then completed the rout.
The five-time champions are favoured to top the three-team group that includes Cambodia.
The national squad begin their campaign against the Philippines in two days time. It could well be a do-or-die match for the Cambodians. With Australia showing their full potential, a win over the Philippines would be crucial for Cambodia to advance to the semi-finals as the best second placed team.
With the top teams from the three groups advancing to the knockout stages, only one of the three second placed team will be able to join them.
