The US Open badminton championships that started earlier today saw three seeded doubles pairs crashing out.
The men’s doubles He Zhi-Wei-Huang Jui-Hsuan were the highest seeds to crash out. The third seeded duo lost out 12-20, 20-22 in an all-Taiwanese clash against Chou Yu Hsiang-Wu Hsuan-Yi.
Also crashing out were the sixth seeded men’s double pair of Kevin Lee-Ty Alexander Lindeman of Canada. They were beaten 21-17, 19-21, 16-21 by the unseeded German duo of Bjarne Geiss-Jones Ralfy Jansen in their opening match.
Women’s doubles fifth seed Ririna Hiramoto-Kokona Ishikawa of Japan were edged out 6-21, 21-10, 17-21 by teammates Sumire Nakade-Miyu Takahashi.
Meanwhile, having missed international action over the last three months due to injury, USA icon Zhang Beiwen returns to the circuit at the championships when the singles action starts tomorrow.
The defending champion, who won her second US Open title after a 10-year gap, last played this season at the Orleans Masters 2026 in March. Beiwen takes on young compatriot Ella Lin in the first round.
The women’s singles draw is studded with all the big names from Pan Am. Top seed Michelle Li will be looking for her first US Open title and begins her campaign against Chen Su Yu. Her compatriot Rachel Chan, who is in the same quarter, takes on Shriyanshi Valishetty, while another Canadian contender, Zhang Wen Yu, faces Huang Ching Ping in the third quarter.
In men’s singles, veteran Taiwanese Chou Tien Chen begins his campaign at the top of the draw as he seeks his first US Open title. Other contenders include Brian Yang and Kidambi Srikanth.
