Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion looked every bit the version that won this title in Los Angeles three years ago as he moved to 7-under 133 and a four-stroke lead over four players.
Clark leads enters the third round and will play alongside Matt Fitzpatrick on Saturday afternoon. Xander Schauffele, Sam Stevens, and Tom Kim are all tied with Fitzpatrick at 3-under, Collin Morikawa is at 2-under, and there are a host of big-name chasers at even-par or better.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler (T11) made the cut for a PGA TOUR-leading 77th straight time while Justin Thomas (T7) snapped a streak of three straight missed cuts and 10 consecutive over-par rounds.
Notables golfers missing the cut include Bryson DeChambeau (+5), Viktor Hovland (+5), Rickie Fowler (+5), Patrick Cantlay (+6), Shane Lowry (+6), Jon Rahm (+6), Adam Scott (+8), defending champion J.J. Spaun (+8) and Brooks Koepka (+10).
For Clark, it was his second-best opening 36-hole score in 19 major championship starts since his victory here in 2023. The four-shot 36-hole lead is also the largest at the U.S. Open since Dustin Johnson led by four at Shinnecock Hills in 2018.
Current FedExCup leader and 2022 U.S. Open champion Fitzpatrick, who trails by four following an even-par 70 is the most recent international winner of the U.S. Open and is in search of his fourth win of the season.
Schauffele carded a second-round 66, equaling his second-best score in 38 rounds at the U.S. Open (best: 62/R1/2023). The two-time major champion has finished inside the top 14 in all nine prior U.S. Open appearances.
Stevens has never missed a cut in eight major championship starts, including the first three majors this season (Masters Tournament/T24, PGA Championship/T65); best finish in a major is T23 at the 2025 U.S. Open. The 29-year-old seeks his first win on Tour and has three runner-up finishes (2023 Valero Texas Open, 2025 Farmers Insurance Open, 2025 3M Open).
As for Kim, he holds his best 36-hole position in 17 major championship starts while two-time major champion Collin Morikawa posted a second-round 65. It was Morikawa’s best score in 28 rounds at the U.S. Open. He had trailed by nine shots at the conclusion of the first round, which would equal the largest come-from-behind victory after 18 holes in U.S. Open history since Jack Fleck in 1955.
Rory McIlroy (T11/Even) trails by seven following a 1-over 71. The six-time major champion is seeking to become the seventh player to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.
World No. 1 and 20-time PGA TOUR winner Scottie Scheffler is tied with McIlroy and trails by seven in bid to become the seventh player in history to complete the Career Grand Slam.
