The pair defeated Lim Jonghoon-Shin Yubin 11-7, 11-6, 11-13) n the mixed doubles final at Singapore Smash table tennis championships

Heading into the final, Calderano-Takahashi had a shocking record against the No.1 seeds, having lost two matches without taking a single game, one of those coming in the final of WTT Star Contender Ljubljana 2025. On top of that, just hours before the final, Calderano had suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Chen Yuanyu in the men’s singles Round of 16.

In this match, the Brazilians were in control from the get-go and started firing off winners in twos and threes to set up five Game Points. Jonghoon-Yubin attempted to regain their footing in the first game, but the gap was too large, and Calderano-Takahashi ultimately won their first game against the Korean duo.

“We’ve been playing better and better every, every tournament. We actually haven’t practised mixed doubles since the last tournament, the Finals in Hong Kong, for two months. But I think we’re on the right path. We played great here, especially in the final. I mean, they are a great double. They’re number one in the world for a reason. They have many titles,” said Calderano.

Out to prove that was not a one-off, Calderano-Takahashi went 4-1 up to loud cheers from those inside The Kallang. Jonghoon-Yubin, trying with all their might to stop their opponents from coming within touching distance of their first WTT title since July, closed the gap to one point at 7-6, but another flurry of points gave the second game to the WTT Contender Buenos Aires 2025 champions.

The Brazilians were so strong that it wasn’t until the third game that Jonghoon-Yubin finally took the lead, and when they did, they looked dangerous. A 0-4 advantage quickly grew to 4-8, but when Takahashi-Calderano levelled the score, their opponents called a time-out. Unfortunately for the Korean duo, it did not have the desired effect, and they found themselves behind again.

They recovered to force their first game point of the match, but Jonghoon missed the table, and chaos ensued. After the serve on their second game point, all four players stepped back and started firing at each other way behind the table. Jonghoon returned Calderano’s blistering forearm shot, but Takahashi was perfectly positioned and blasted one right at Yubin, and it pinged off her racket and high into the sky.

On championship point, the four players were again firing from range. A smart backhand from Calderano put Jonghoon on the backfoot, and Takahashi was able to send it to the other side to a sprawling Yubin.

A cross-table forearm was delivered to a diving Jonghoon whose shot missed the table, cueing scenes of jubilation. Takahashi sank to her knees, and Calderano almost fell backwards in excitement before his partner was back up and jumping into his arms.

Meanwhile, Patrick Franziska has pulled off another stunning upset to add to his collection after downing the men’s singles fourth seed Tomokazu Harimoto 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8.

Heading into the round of 16 clash, the German giant had faced Harimoto four times on the WTT stage, losing all of them and only taking four games, three of which came in a 4:3 loss way back in 2022.

In a match that lasted over 40 minutes, it was Harimoto who came flying out of the blocks, storming to a 2-7 lead. But fans inside The Kallang were behind Franziska, and he found his groove in the second, taking all the points on the opening two serves.

Franziska, who only has one WTT senior title compared to Harimoto’s seven, hit another four mid-way through the third game to take the lead over the Japanese star for only the second time in his career.

That lead was short-lived, as Harimoto came back with vengeance, taking six of the last seven points in the fourth to force a fifth and final game.

And as if a deciding game isn’t tense enough, the momentum constantly swung back and forth. Harimoto first found himself leading 1-3 before Franziska took seven of the next nine to go 8-5 up. Fighting to stay in Singapore Smash 2026,

Harimoto unleashed all his power to get back on level terms, but three stunning points sealed the win for the German.

Franziska has built a reputation for causing huge upsets in the past, including a thrilling comeback over then World No. 2 Fan Zhendong at Saudi Smash 2024 on his way to the final. He also knocked Ma Long out of the Round of 32 at Singapore Smash 2024.

Bruna Takahashi jumped into the arms of her partner Hugo Calderano as the pair became the first non-Asian

[44
65
post-9940","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-international","tag-table-tennis
["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano.jpg",1920,1080,false
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-300x169.jpg",300,169,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-768x432.jpg",640,360,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-1024x576.jpg",640,360,true],"1536x1536":["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-1536x864.jpg",1536,864,true],"2048x2048":["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano.jpg",1920,1080,false
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-825x575.jpg",825,575,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano-590x410.jpg",590,410,true
admin
International
International
0
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Bruna-Takahashi-r-and-Hugo-Calderano.jpg
["GET
