Qiu, on the other hand, had experience on his side, having made it to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Smash at every edition.

The opening games both went in the German Qiu’s favour, although they couldn’t have been closer. Poret was the first to get a foothold in the opening game, taking a 9-6 lead after there was nothing to split the two over the first twelve points. But it was Qiu who got the first game point, only for Poret to save and then miss one of his own. WTT Champions Frankfurt 2025 finalist Qiu needed two more bites of the cherry to get over the line in Game One.

Qiu then took the second game before the Frenchman came roaring back, not once falling behind as he levelled the match.

Poret has made a fine start to the 2026 season, reaching the men’s singles final of WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026 and lifting the men’s doubles crown.

That form shone through in the final game, where he was able to put the brakes on a strong start from Qiu, who was leading right up until 7-8. But as the final game reached its crescendo, Poret hit four winners on the bounce to secure his place and close the curtain on Qiu’s exploits.

Going for his second WTT Grand Smash title, Truls Moregard is looking fully capable of reaching that goal, banking his ticket to the Round of 16 with an emphatic 11-4, 12-10, 11-6 victory over Jonathan Groth.

Moregard looked composed from start to finish on Wednesday evening, establishing the front foot approach with a dominant display in game one. He’d see his resolve tested in the second as Groth fought back from 10-5 down to draw level at 10-10, but Moregard remained steadfast, squeezing over the line 12-10 to dent Groth’s confidence further.

The Dane threatened to draw out the match longer, coming out with a stronger effort in game three, but there’d be no epic comeback in this match, as Europe Smash – Sweden 2025 champion Moregard sealed the deal in a little under 24 minutes.

One man also looking to follow in Moregard’s footsteps was Hugo Calderano, with the Thrill from Brazil chasing his first WTT Grand Smash title.

Like Moregard, Calderano is also making quick progress through the draw with his latest success coming at the expense of Wong Chun Ting. He won 14-12, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9, and could potentially meet Moregard in the quarterfinals.

There was drama late into the night at , as Patrick Franziska staged a late comeback to deny Alexis Lebrun in a 6-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 epic under the lights on Infinity ∞ Arena.

Lebrun was looking for his first win over Franziska on the WTT stage, and looked to be on track to make that breakthrough, pulling two games clear thanks to a ruthless start from the French superstar.

However, jaws would drop around The Kallang as Franziska somehow flipped the match on its head, the German star kicking into high gear from game three onwards. A match that had everything, there was drama right to the death with Franziska making a successful TTR challenge at a crucial time, reversing an initial service fault call at 8-5 in the fifth.

While Lebrun would successfully save a Match Point late on, it wasn’t enough to knock his German counterpart off course as Franziska delivered a ferocious serve packed with heavy spin down the line, catching Lebrun out to bring the contest to a close.

Elsewhere, last year’s surprise finalist Kuai Man was very nearly undone by a different kind of surprise in the women’s singles.

Her Round of 32 opponent Anna Hursey looked inspired with the Welsh teen chasing an almighty upset as she took a shock lead in the match. But Man has firmly established herself as one of the sport’s best since her breakout Singapore Smash 2025 campaign, and she eventually corrected course, meeting Hursey’s bright start with a firm response 9-11, 11-8, 11-3, 12-10.

Former WTT Grand Smash semifinalist Mima Ito is also through to the last 16 in Singapore, resisting early pressure from Maria Xiao to see off the Spanish qualifier 12-10, 11-9, 11-4.

There was also an upset in the women’s doubles, as Maria Xiao-Adina Diaconu knocked out the No.2 seeds Satsuki Odo-Joo Cheonhui with a 8-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11,9, 11-8 win, meaning the top two seeds in the women’s houbles event have both fallen.

In one of the opening matches of the day, Kuai Man-Chen Yi, the women’s doubles No.5 seeds, eliminated Kim Nayeong-Ryu Hanna, the event’s top seeds 11-7, 9-11, 10-12, 13-11.

Over in the mixed doubles draw, a surprise story is beginning to emerge with the first-time partnership of Baldwin Chan-Kim Nayeong still in contention.

Knocking out the No.4 seeds Lin Yun-Ju-Cheng I-Ching earlier in the week, Chan-Nayeong have been flying in Singapore, and they pulled another magic trick out of the hat on Infinity ∞ Arena, upstaging Huang Youzheng- Chen Yi 11-5, 11-6, 13-11 to move one step away from the final.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="Top Points of Day 4 | #SingaporeSmash 2026" width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/AShX0JUatKM?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer;
