A draw in the fourth and final game against American Fabiano Caruana was enough to seal a 2.5–1.5 match victory in Weissenhaus, Germany.

The decisive moment came in game three. Carlsen won from a dead lost position, turning the match in his favor. Entering the final game, he needed only a draw and achieved it in an equal endgame after Caruana missed late chances to mount a comeback. Both finalists qualified for the 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship.

The 2026 tournament marks the first official FIDE-recognized Freestyle Chess World Championship. World number one Carlsen had previously attempted to win the FIDE Fischer Random World Championship without success. In Weissenhaus, he secured the official FIDE Freestyle Chess title – his 21st world title across formats.

In the match for third place, Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan defeated Germany’s Vincent Keymer. Abdusattorov secured the match by drawing a winning position in the final game, also ensuring qualification for the 2027 championship.

American Hans Niemann took fifth place with a 2–0 victory over India’s Arjun Erigaisi, while anotehr American, Levon Aronian won his Armageddon against Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan) to take seventh place.

In the women’s exhibition match, Bibisara Assaubayeva of Kazakhstan prevailed over Swiss Alexandra Kosteniuk after winning the third game and drawing the fourth.

Carlsen vs. Caruana 2.5-1.5

If there was ever a moment when Caruana could have beaten Carlsen in an important match–one where a world title was at stake–it was yesterday. The American GM, who drew all twelve games against the same opponent in the 2018 classical world championship only to lose the playoff, really had Carlsen on the ropes today.

After a good, solid draw for Caruana in the first game, he got winning positions not in one, not in two, but in all three remaining games in this final, but somehow Carlsen survived them all and even won one of those games. This way, Carlsen scored his first world title in the Chess960 format, and his 21st career world title overall.

At the second match game, three times in a row, Caruana got a chance to play a pawn move on the kingside that would have impaired Carlsen’s central piece setup, after which White’s more active pieces would have been able to bring a decision. This was the least clear of Caruana’s winning positions, but the engines do give White a more than +2.5 pawn advantage. But Carlsen got away with a draw.

Colors were switched halfway through the match, which meant that Caruana got the white pieces one more time. Once again, he got a winning position, even more winning than before, but somehow, finishing it off was once again an arduous task for Caruana under the circumstances and the pressure.

This time, it all came out of nowhere as Carlsen played a move that was just a howler of a move.

“I thought that I was doing reasonable well for a long time and then I missed one of his resources there with 14.Nh4 and then I reacted poorly. Usually, when you get a completely lost position it happens gradually but in this case I captured his knight and I realized he has an in-between check and I can resign. I had a little bit of hopes still but then when he found these very nice moves with 19.Kd2 and then 20.f5 then I thought, well, this is over,” said Carlsen.

Caruana got a free attack on the black king and with maybe just a single extra minute on the clock, he would have found one of several winning ways that were available to him. That he even ended up losing this game was heartbreaking. “Of course it’s easily winning in many ways, also very practical ways, maybe some less practical but winning ways but I just didn’t choose any of them,” Caruana said.

“There were a couple of early knockout punches that he missed and when I got in this 24…c3+ move I thought my position has a little bit of potential now,” Carlsen explained further. “I couldn’t see a very clear knockout at that point and I was hoping he couldn’t either. I thought as soon as he gets very low on time, usually the quality of his play drops very significantly so at that point I was hoping I might have a chance. He made a few checks back and forth, it seemed he was getting more and more frustrated and then towards the end I could have probably have forced a draw with the move 34…Qe6 instead of 34…Rf8 but at that point I was kind of smelling blood since I felt that I had been on the ropes for this game, and the second game wasn’t easy either. I just thought: I’m probably not gonna get a better chance than this one.”

It all worked out as Carlsen had hoped for: Caruana collapsed a few moves later. “I am very happy with that part, that I managed to kind of psychologically reset and play for a win when I could,” Carlsen noted.

For the fourth game, position #828 was picked and this happened to be one that was seen before at Freestyle: it had been the first position of the round-robin tournament during the Paris leg of the 2025 Tour. Caruana was there, and had even played it twice before: also in a game against Hikaru Nakamura in the Las Vegas leg.

After the big disappointments in the last two games, it was hard for Caruana to put up another fight for that last game, but he did. Carlsen was better for a long time, but at some point went wrong, and also here, Caruana was briefly winning.

“In the last game I could feel early in the game that I’m just so exhausted,” said Carlsen. “It’s been a few long days here and then a few long days in London before that and I didn’t just have any strength left whatsoever.” The Norwegian GM admitted that he was losing, but knew he had saved himself when he played 26.Qg2.

“It’s certainly not one of my more convincing wins today but it feels great to be able to win on a bit of an offday. Most of all I’m just happy to be done,” said Carlsen. He earned $100,000 with this victory; Caruana made $60,000.

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen is the 2026 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Champion.
