from Indonesia as they thrash Korea 5-0

Indonesia produced an attacking masterclass as they kickstarted their AFC Futsal Asian Cup Group A campaign in Jakarta with a crushing 5-0 win against Korea.

The result sees Indonesia joining Iraq – who defeated Kyrgyz Republic 4-2 in the earlier match – as the early pacesetters in the group.

In Group B, Vietnam came from behind twice to defeat Kuwait 5-4 in a fast-paced tie at the Jakarta International Velodrome.

The result places Diego Giustozzi’s side at the top of the group, ahead of Thailand on goal difference after the latter defeated Lebanon 2-0 in the earlier fixture.

Indonesia seized the early initiative with their high intensity start rewarded with the opening goal in the second minute following a kick-in that saw Rizki Xavier picking out Mochammad Iqbal for a simple tap-in.

Korea had no response to Indonesia’s persistent attacks and were forced to sit deep in their own half with goalkeeper Jeong Joo-ho doing his utmost to keep the East Asian side in the game.

Joo-ho, however, could do nothing in the 11th minute as Indonesia doubled their advantage, Ardiansyah Nur setting up Rio Pangestu for a beautiful low finish from outside the semi-circle.

Against the run of play, Korea found an opening but Kang Ju-kwang’s looping header was nodded away by a recovering Dewa Rizki before Joo-ho tipped a fiercely-struck Yogi Saputra long range effort onto the post.

Indonesia produced another lightning fast start after the interval, Mochammad with a precise strike on the rebound in the 21st minute after Israr Megantara’s initial effort from an acute angle had bounced off the bar.

It became 4-0 eight minutes later when Firman Andriansyah threaded the perfect through ball for Israr – who had ghosted in behind Korea Republic’s defence – to slot past a rooted Joo-ho.

Korea had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 32nd minute following a flowing one-touch passing move that freed Kim Gun-woo into space but the 28-year-old scooped his effort just wide of Ahmad Habiebie’s goalmouth.

The emphatic win was sealed with three minutes left to play when Reza Gunawan reacted quickest to steer home from close range after Joo-ho’s parry fell kindly into his path.

Indonesia next face Kyrgyz Republic on Thursday with Korea Republic hoping to rebound against Iraq.

Iraq secured a thrilling 4-2 win against Kyrgyz Republic with the two 2024 quarter-finalist sides putting on a show at Indonesia Arena, taking turns to be ahead before Iraq, powered by Salim Faisal’s brace, earned a winning start.

Kyrgyz Republic got off to a perfect start, taking the lead inside the opening minute when Donierbek Amanbaev timed his run to the back post to sweep home Kairat Kubanychov’s drive cross.

The Central Asian side put Iraq’s goalmouth under heavy pressure with Bektur Iliasov, Daniiar Talaibekov and Argen Abdurashit Uulu all having attempts which were thwarted by Ibrahim Ahmed.

Iraq improved as the game went on with Salim Faisal dribbling past Iliasov but could only hit the side netting before Mustafa Ihsan produced a swift turn to warm the palms of Kyrgyz Republic custodian Bekbolot Akmataliev.

Akmataliev, however, was shown the red card in the 12th minute after Video Support review found him handling Salim Kadhim shot on the halfway line, with Iraq taking full advantage playing with a man extra through Faisal’s fiercely struck effort a minute later.

Iraq turned the screws on Kyrgyz Republic and went ahead three minutes before the break with a well-taken corner routine with Faisal’s volley finished off from close range by Tareq Zeyad.

The game swung back in favour of Kyrgyz Republic after the interval with Kubanychov’s header in the 23rd minute cleared on the line by an alert Faisal.

Kubanychov, however, was not to be denied three minutes later, finding space on the edge of the semi-circle to fire a rising shot into the top corner for the equaliser.

The parity only lasted three minutes with Faisal once again the tormentor of Kyrgyz Republic, his initial volley leading to a corner, then seeing his first attempt from the resulting set-piece palmed away by Ulanbek Chorobek Uulu before slamming home the rebound.

Iraq added another through Mohanad Abdulhadi’s breakaway goal in the final minute and could have won by a bigger margin had it not been for a string of spectacular saves from Chorobek Uulu.

Kuwait went on the offensive from the start, with Vietnam keeper Pham Van Tu making a point blank save to deny Abdullah Thamer in the second minute and skipper Saleh Alfadhel slicing his attempt from outside the area.

Pham again came to Vietnam’s rescue in the sixth minute when he turned away a stinging effort from Salman Albaeijan but the keeper failed to keep out Thamer’s rising shot a minute later after the midfielder capitalised on a defensive error.

Abdul Borashed increased their lead in the ninth minute when he latched on to a loose ball and rifled his shot from outside the area past a flailing Pham.

The Southeast Asian side narrowed the gap two minutes later when Chau Doan Phat robbed the ball from Alfadhel and poked his effort under custodian Fahad Alkhawari.

Vietnam drew level in the 16th minute through a scorcher from Nguyen Thinh Phat who, with his back facing the goalmouth, spun around and sent his shot into the top right corner.

Kuwait’s Omar, however, restored his side’s lead again with a well-struck shot from outside the area before Vietnam equalised seconds before half time through Nguyen Manh Dung.

Vietnam turned aggressors after the break, with Alkhawari pulling off saves from Vu Ngoc Anh and Nguyen Da Hai and then again from Vu before Duong Ngoc Linh rattled the post with his flicked-on shot.

They took the lead for the first time when Alkhawari failed to properly handle Tu Minh Quang’s shot and could only watch as the ball slipped from his grasp and rolled into the net.

Skipper Manh Dung then slotted in goal number five following a set-piece with AbdulAziz Alsarraj pulling one back two minutes before the end but time ran out for Kuwait as Vietnam took three hard-earned points.

Vietnam face Lebanon next while Kuwait meet Thailand, with both matches on Thursday.

Goals by Worasak Srirangpirot and Muhammad Osamanmusa gave Thailand, the 2024 runners-up a well-earned win.

Thailand took possession from the start, but Lebanon held off their advances, with Itticha Praphaphan trying in the sixth minute but booting his effort over the bar.

The Thai captain again went close in a one-on-one situation with keeper Karim Joueidi moments later, but sent his shot wide to the left.

Joueidi was constantly threatened, pushing away a power-packed shot from Krit Aransanyalak in the ninth minute and then blocking one from the left by Therdsak Charoenphong.

Thai striker Muhammad Osamanmusa saw his attempt in the 16th minute parried away by Joueidi before play swung to the other end, with keeper Nuttapong Yeemarep forced into a diving save by Lebanon skipper Mustafa Rhyem.

Lebanon came back refreshed after the break, with Nuttapong tipping over a fine attempt from midfielder Mohsen Mohsen before Osamanmusa tried his luck again at the opposing end, this time from just outside the area, only for the keeper to stand in his way.

Joueidi’s hard work until that point then came undone in the 27th minute when Worasak broke the deadlock with a first-time backheel from inside the circle that went past the stunned keeper.

Osamanmusa increased the Thai lead in the 34th minute when he got the better of his marker and let loose an unstoppable shot from outside the area that whizzed past an outstretched Joueidi.

Indonesia produced an attacking masterclass as
