Chun-yi held match point at 20-18 only to see Victor drawing level before wrapping up the see-saw semi-final on the second time calling.

Jonatan had a slow start and was down 5-13 in the opening game, failing to adapt well with the unpredictable draft in the hall. A determined Jonatan slowly found his rhythm and clawed his way back to whittle down Kean Yew’s huge lead. He not only managed to draw level but also managed to pull ahead and closing out the game.

The fightback seemed to have Kean Yew rattled, and Jonatan kept his composure.

Both players traded points until the midway of the second game, before Jonatan took a slight advantage to lead 18-16 only to see Kean Yew leveling the score at 19-19.

Jonatan seized match point 20-19 but a net error allowed Kean Yew a lifeline. But Jonatan was not to be denied as picked up the two points needed to wrap up the match.

The women’s singles final will be a repeat of the Malaysian Open championships match between top seeded An Se-young of Korea and China’s Wang Zhiyi.

Se-young defeated former champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand 21-11, 21-7 while Zhiyi defeated Chen Yu Fei 21-15, 23-21 in their respective women’s singles semi-final match-ups.

Se-young extended her winning streak against Intanon to 13 matches, going all the way back to 2019 while it was only the second win in 16 meetings for Zhi Yi over Yu Fei.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto upset the World No. 2 Malaysian pair of World Championships silver medalists Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan 21-16, 21-13. It was the Malaysian pairs third straight women’s doubles defeat to their Japanese rivals.

It was also the end of the road for the Malaysian men’s doubles second seeds Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik. The duo, who were runners-up in Malaysia last week, were beaten 10-21, 21-13, 11-21 by Japan’s Hiroki MIdorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita.

SEMI-FINAL RESULTS

MEN’S SINGLES: Jonatan Christie (Ina) bt Loh Kean Yew (Sgp) 21-18, 22-20;
