The drama is ramping up at WTT Star Contender Doha, with last night\u2019s headlines dominated in contrasting emotions by the two players who outclassed the world\u2019s best here in Doha just last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting with Zhu Yuling, her first taste of this week\u2019s WTT Star Contender event couldn\u2019t have played out any better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Facing off against qualifier Zhu Ziyu in a repeat of their clash from China Smash 2025, once again it was Yuling who held the upper hand in this rivalry, banking another straight games 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 victory against the defender to cruise into the last 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meeting for the third time in just 79 days, we saw another cracker of a showdown between Satsuki Odo and Zeng Jian, who went the distance once again to win 11-6, 7-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Odo and Jian have gone back and forth trading blows every time they meet, and their latest encounter was no different. One would jab, the other would respond in kind, taking it right down to the wire at Lusail Sports Arena. But in the end, it was Odo who squeezed over the line, leading the decider from point three all the way to the finish to keep her title aspirations alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shin Yubin also came exceptionally close to a shock exit, but managed to squeeze past Annett Kauffman 12-10, 7-11, 14-12, 11-8. Yubin saved three game points in a row, and later a fourth, to stop the German going 2-1 up in the tie. In the fourth game, they were locked at 8-8, but Shin scored three winners to qualify for the next round.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the women\u2019s singles champion from last week\u2019s WTT Champions Doha 2026, Yuling, emerged unscathed, there was abject disappointment for the men\u2019s singles champion from that event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unable to compete in his second-round match, Lin Yun-Ju\u2019s medical withdrawal meant the prospect of back-to-back title successes in Doha is officially off for the \u2018Silent Assassin\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wen Ruibo moves through in his stead, setting up a tantalising showdown with Anders Lind, who dug deep in a tricky showdown defeating Chen Junsong 11-13, 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7 to bank his spot in the third round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Another huge shock took place at Lusail Sports Arena, with World No. 7 Liang Jingkun suffering a 11-5, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11, 11-8 defeat to compatriot and World No.36 Zhou Qihao.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Qihao gave Jingkun a mountain to climb by taking the first two games and dominating the third, at one point leading 5-9. But Jingkun, who made it to the quarterfinal of WTT Champions Doha 2026 last week, scored six points in a row to deny Qihao the match.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jingkun had finally found his groove and stormed the fourth to set up the deciding game. And it looked as if he were about to pull off a huge comeback, going 3-6 and 7-8 up. But Qihao dug deep and hit four winners to take the match.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
World No. 12 Xiang Peng, however, did manage to fight back from going behind in his round of 32 match, as he dispatched Vladimir Sidorenko 11-5, 5-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, amongst all the drama that unfolded on Friday night, perhaps the best story cam from 17-year-old Kuo Guan-Hong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Guan-Hong, who is fast making a name for himself on the world stage, pulled off a huge upset on Table 1, putting three games past former WTT Grand Smash semifinalist Benedikt Duda without reply 11-6, 11-8, 11-7 to make the rest of the playing field sit up and take notice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
