{"id":6343,"date":"2025-11-22T08:09:40","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T01:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.infinitysport.asia\/news\/?p=6343"},"modified":"2025-11-22T08:09:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T01:09:43","slug":"latvia-book-historic-world-championship-semifinal-slot-in-adelaide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.infinitysport.asia\/news\/latvia-book-historic-world-championship-semifinal-slot-in-adelaide\/","title":{"rendered":"Latvia book historic World Championship semifinal slot in Adelaide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Latvia\u2019s Tina Graudina-Anastasija Samoilova stunned USA\u2019s Kelly Cheng and Molly Shaw\u00a021-18, 21-17 to qualify for the semifinals of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship in Adelaide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina-Anastasija will take on top seeds Th\u00e2mela Coradello-Victoria Lopes of Brazil in the first semi-final while USA\u2019s Taryn Brasher-Kristen Nuss face another Brazilian pair of Carol Salgado-Rebecca Cavalcanti in the second semifinal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Competing together at the World Championship for the fourth time in their careers, Tina -Anastasija were already guaranteed their best campaign ever in the event in Adelaide, having made it past the Round of 16 for the first time, but they took not one, but two steps further, defeating Kelly -Shaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe knew that they were a very strong team, and that we had to play our best to win,\u201d Anastasija reacted. \u201cAnd today we did it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FIVB World Ranking leaders Th\u00e2mela-Victoria are both ready to make their first semifinal appearance at the World Championship after they defeated Italians Valentina Gottardi and Reka Orsi Toth 21-16, 21-19 in the first quarterfinal of the day in Australia to continue undefeated in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so, so happy,\u201d Th\u00e2mela reacted. \u201cIt didn\u2019t sink in yet, I don\u2019t even know what to say. There were a lot of Brazilians here pushing us, and I want to thank them. And also, our team, our family, and our friends. We\u2019re very happy and will fight to win that title for Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the men&#8217;s competition, Olympic champions David Ahman-Jonatan Hellvig of Sweden will take on Germany\u2019s Nils Ehlers-Clemens Wickler in semifinal while Swedish youngsters Jacob Holting Nilsson-Elmer Andersson will face France\u2019s Teo Rotar-Arnaud Gauthier-Rat in the other semifinal match up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be a repeat of last year\u2019s Paris 2024 Olympic final between David-Jonatan-Hellvig and Nils-Clemens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last quarterfinals the Swedish jump-setters outlasted mighty Brazilians Evandro Oliveira-Arthur Mariano Lanci, while the German duo dethroned the defending world champions from Tlaxcala 2023, Czechia\u2019s Ondrej Perusic-David Schweiner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third-seeded Olympic champions Ahman-Hellvig squeezed out a nail-biting\u00a022-20, 22-20\u00a0victory in their quarterfinal against fourth-seeded Evandro-Arthur Lanci. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most of the first set, the Swedes were trailing in the score, but right at the end, they flipped it around to reach the first set point at 20-19 and closed it on the second with a successful swing by Ahman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second set was also very competitive and the lead went back and forth several times, before the Brazilians reached set point at 20-19. The Swedes reacted with three consecutive points from Hellvig, who closed the match with two monster blocks in a row. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a total of three blocking points and one ace, Hellvig led the winners with 17 points. Ahman chipped in with another 14, also including an ace. Evandro was the best scorer of the match with 22 points, including three blocks, while Arthur Lanci finished with 14 points, all in swings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last men\u2019s quarterfinal, 14th-seeded Ehlers-Wickler, Paris 2024 runners-up, produced a\u00a021-18, 21-18\u00a0upset of eighth-seeded world champions Perusic-Schweiner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Czechs were making more unforced errors, the Germans were staying more focused on the court to dominate the match. They broke away after 16-16 in the first set with three points in row and shortly won it on their second set point. Ehlers &amp; Wickler took control of the scoreboard at 3-2 in the second set and never let go until Ehlers put away the match winner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wickler led the German pair with a team-high 18 points, including an ace. Ehlers also fired an ace and added three kill blocks to finish with 15 points. Schweiner topped the chart with three blocks and two aces towards a match-high 23 points, while Perusic scored nine times, all in attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swedish youngsters Jacob Holting-Elmer will take on France\u2019s Teo Rotar-Arnaud Gauthier-Rat in the semifinals and it will be their second meeting in the tournament, after the Frenchmen achieved a three-set win over the Swedes in the deciding match for the first place in Pool G. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two teams emerged victorious from the first two quarterfinals in Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a tight clash between youthful talent and masterful experience, 20-year-old Holting Nilsson and 19-year-old Andersson celebrated a\u00a021-18, 22-20\u00a0victory over 39-year-old Rio 2016 Olympian Chaim Schalk and 31-year-old James Shaw of the United States in the quarterfinal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>he seventh-seeded Swedes came back from an 8-4 opponent advantage to win the first set. They maintained a slight lead for most of the second set, but in the end, the ninth-seeded Americans denied them a double match point to push the set into overtime. Still, Holting Nilsson-Andersson took the next two points to close the match and book a spot in the semifinals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holting Nilsson was the best scorer of the match with 16 points, including three aces and a kill block. Andersson contributed another 14 points, all in swings. Shaw raised four kill block and fired an ace to lead the American team with a total of 15 points, one more than his partner\u2019s 14, also including one serving point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other quarterfinal was even more competitive and was pushed to a tie-breaker resolution before 21-year-old Teo Rotar and 29-year-old Paris 2024 Olympian Arnaud Gauthier-Rat could triumph with a\u00a021-19, 17-21, 15-13\u00a0win over Lukas Pfretzschner-Sven Winter of Germany. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first set went quite level through 19-19, when the 18th-seeded Frenchmen closed it off with two points in a row. The 20th-seeded Germans came back from a three-point deficit in the second and, after 17-17, broke away with four in a row to level the match. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tie-breaker also offered a hard-fought battle through 13-13, when Rotar nailed the last two points to bring home the victory. He led the winners with 24 points, including three kill blocks and an ace. Gauthier-Rat added another 18, all in attack. Pfretzschner impressed with four aces towards a 21-point tally, while Winter emerged as the best scorer of the match with 25 points, including two aces and two blocks.
