{"id":5761,"date":"2025-11-09T08:51:24","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T01:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.infinitysport.asia\/news\/?p=5761"},"modified":"2025-11-09T08:51:25","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T01:51:25","slug":"north-korea-champions-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.infinitysport.asia\/news\/north-korea-champions-again\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea champions again"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>North Korea lifted the FIFA U-17 Women&#8217;s World Cup Morocco 2025 title with an impressive 3-0 win over the Netherlands in the final at the Olympic Stadium of Rabat last night<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In defending the title won in 2024 in stunning fashion, North Korea lifted the trophy for a record-extending fourth time, having also emerged champions in 2006 and 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking to emulate Spain &#8211; the only team to have won back-to-back titles &#8211; North Korea were quick to seize control against a side they had already defeated 5-0 in the group stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The early aggression paid dividends in the 14th minute, with Kim Won Sim giving them the lead with her seventh goal of the tournament, the forward heading home from close range after tournaments debutants Netherlands failed to clear a cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lead was doubled four minutes later when North Korea&#8217;s high press saw them gaining possession just outside the penalty box with Pak Rye Yong<em>  <\/em>bundling the ball home at the end of a series of passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third came in the 42nd minute, when a lurking Ri Ui Gyong was quick to close in on an under hit back pass, with goalkeeper Maren Groothoff&#8217;s clearance hitting the midfielder and settling in the back of the net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The onus was on European champions Netherlands to find a way back into the tie in the second half but North Korea continued to enjoy the larger share of the possession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They came close several times but were more content to keep the ball as they closed out the match to create more history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yu Jong Hyang, who netted eight goals, won Golden Ball and Golden Boot awards with strike partner Won Sim taking the Silver awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Champions again! \ud83d\ude4c<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/U17WWC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#U17WWC<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9ylZLxBlJD\">pic.twitter.com\/9ylZLxBlJD<\/a><\/p>&mdash; FIFA Women&#39;s World Cup (@FIFAWWC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FIFAWWC\/status\/1987271312151355659?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 8, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Mexico earned a spot by topping Brazil 3-1 in a penalty shootout in the match for third place. Both teams were tied on 1-1 at the end of regulation time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second-half stoppage-time equaliser and a superb performance from goalkeeper Valentina Murrieta in the ensuing penalty shootout earned Mexico the podium finish,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazil enjoyed the better start and nearly found an opener through Evelin, whose sweeping left-footed effort smacked the post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexico started to settle in, though, and frustrated the Brazil midfield with relentless pressure, however the chances were still lacking as South American shot-stopper Ana Morganti enjoyed a trouble-free first 45.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brazil kept poking and prodding and finally breached the Mexico defence when Maria played a cutback pass into the path of Kaylane and she produced a strong finish into net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Mexico never gave up and a second-half stoppage-time free-kick swung in by Berenice Ibarra was headed into the net by the unfortunate Evelin for an agonising own goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mexico miracle meant matters had to be settled in a penalty shootout, and from the spot <em>El Tricolor <\/em>proved superior, with Murrieta making a pair of saves and Fernanda Monroy converting the winning kick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the shootout win, Mexico become the fifth country with at least two FIFA U-17 Women\u2019s World Cup medals. The  Bronze Boot was awarded to Italian Giulia Galli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jong-hyang also won the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament with Silver Ball going to Won-sim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The
