Just three points dropped in the opening game, Kallberg couldn’t have dreamt of a better start.

Recognised at the underdog, Kallberg commanded the overwhelming approval of the crowd, who willed him on as he returned to the table for game two.

He’d repay their support, taking the energy from the stands to fuel another outstanding performance. An audacious Kallberg flick out wide to the forehand on his service return at 5-3 prompted Moregard to hit the panic button, calling Time Out in hopes of slowing his opponent’s progress, but to no avail.

Once that second game was locked in, it was always going to be a mammoth task to flip the script, and there would be no such drama as Kallberg kept his foot on the gas to eliminate Moregard from contention.

“I think that I have to stop myself from getting too excited, it’s just one match. I need to put all my effort into my next match, to play this well again is going to be real tough. But of course I’m going into that with good confidence and that made me really happy,” said Kallberg.

The upsets just keep coming, with Korean sensation Lee Sang Su overcoming the odds to take down seventh seed Lin Yun-Ju 12-14, 13-11, 11-7, 11-9.

Having only just reached the quarterfinals in Montpellier less than a week ago, Sang Su is now safely through to the same stage at Süwag Energie ARENA, following his spectacular display against 2023 Frankfurt title winner Yun-ju.

The match was full of twists and turns, with Sang Su saving a total of three game points in the opener, only for World No.11 Yun-ju to eventually secure two consecutive points, sealing the first game with a 14-12 scoreline.

The second game was just as dramatic. Initially trailing by a 5-9 point deficit, Sang Su battled the gap down to 8-10, before winning three points on the trot to lead the game 11-10. Yun-ju would win the following point to bring play to 11-11, but fate ended up favouring Sang Su with a 13-11 tagline, the latter now levelling the scoreboard at one game apiece.

After a rather dominant third game going the way of the Korean player, it was now up to Yun-ju to mount a comeback challenge if he was to stay in this nail-biting battle.

The Chinese Taipei player looked to be in control as play unfolded in the fourth game, Yun-ju powering ahead to a 1-5 point advantage. But Sang Su hit back with interest, Yun-ju now falling behind 10-8, with two match points in favour for his Korean rival.

Saving one match point, Yun-ju closed the distance to 10-9, and was on the verge of reaching deuce, as he ignited a rocket of a backhand flick to Sang Su ’s forehand. But in spectacular fashion, Yun-ju went one step further, countering the flick deep to Sang Su ’s backhand to take the game and match.

Danish ace Anders Lind kept fans on the edge of their seats in his jaw-dropping brawl with Shunsuke Togami, the former winning in five nail-biting games 11-8, 11-5, 5-11, 10-12, 11-9.

Having stunned the table tennis world with his dream-run to the semifinals in Macao, the Danish star will be hoping for similar success in Germany, as he prepares to face fourth seed Felix Lebrun in his quarterfinal battle.

Kanak Jha stunned sixth seed Darko Jorgic in straight games, 11-6, 11-8, 11-3 — an upset defined by Jha’s crisp placement and fast transitions. Jorgic, one of Europe’s hardest hitters, struggled to find rhythm as Jha stayed one step ahead throughout.

Patrick Franziska delivered for the home crowd in a gritty five-game comeback against Lilian Bardet, winning 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-9. Down two games, Franziska flipped the momentum with pinpoint serves and fearless forehands. For Franziska, who had fallen in the first round in Frankfurt the last two years, this victory felt personal.

Compatriot Benedikt Duda couldn’t replicate the same success, falling to Shunsuke Togami 11-4, 11-9, 11-9. The two had last met in 2022, with Duda winning that encounter, but Togami — now a WTT Contender Almaty champion — looked the sharper of the two, controlling tempo and dictating every exchange.

Simon Gauzy outlasted Quadri Aruna 11-0, 9-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7 in a contest that swung like a pendulum.
