While Matsushima brought his famous brand of high-intensity offense, his Swedish counterpart rose to it, letting out a huge roar as he bagged a crucial opening game, willing the crowd on to raise the decibels.

At 6-6 in game two, a fortunate edge shot put Moregard back out in front, while an audacious around the net forehand drew gasps from the Montpellier stands. Matsushima produced an admirable response from 9-6 to 9-8, but Moregard was having none of it, raising the temperature with a jaw-dropping inside out forehand to build a commanding lead.

In this best of seven games clash there was still plenty of time for Matsushima to make a breakthrough. However, a net cord ball at 4-2 in the third would only add to the Japanese player’s frustration.

Recognising the importance of game three in the overall context of the match, Moregard used his one and only time-out at 10-7 after seeing three game points come and go. Delivering a deep baseline serve on his return to the table, Matsushima was caught out. Moregard, who had been at his devastating best for three games, was now sitting just one away from the title.

A dejected Matsushima continued to rue his luck early in the fourth, helplessly watching on as Moregard assembled a 3-0 lead. In a last-ditch effort to try and salvage something from the match, Matsushima called time-out, turning to coach Masataka Morizono in desperate need of a spark.

The 18-year-old prodigy would show some fighting spirit, catching his opponent out on a couple of occasions to force his way ahead at 7-9. But this was Truls Moregard on the other side of the table, a player who always has something up his sleeve.

Swatting away Matsushima’s service in ruthless fashion, Moregard would then capitalise on a long service, unleashing a devilish shot down the line to level the scoreboard at 9-9. Making Matsushima pay on the third ball attack, Moregard now had Championship Point in his hands, and with Matsushima sending his return long, a new champion was crowned.

Three-times a beaten semifinalist at this level, now the Swede becomes only the second-ever European player to lift a purple men’s singles title, following in the footsteps of Montpellier’s own Felix Lebrun.

“It feels crazy to win this, I’m so happy. It’s been a crazy year, winning a Smash (Europe Smash – Sweden 2025) and now this Champions event. WTT Champions events are very famous and respected in our player group. We know that when we go to these events it’s almost impossible to win as only the best 32 players in the world are here. It feels incredible to stand here with this trophy, I dreamt of it, and now here we are,” said Moregard.

What an event it has been for Chinese star Yidi, storming her way through to the Final with edge of the seat victories over the likes of Miwa Harimoto and Joo Cheonhui.

She’d go one step further on Sunday evening, taking down surprise finalist Winter to bag her third WTT Champions title on French soil.

It was Winter who would take an early advantage in the thriller, the World No.26 utilising her anti-spin prowess to take the first game 8-11, before dramatically recovering from a 10-9 point deficit to steal the second game 10-12.

Unwilling to let her German rival pull further ahead, Yidi revved into high gear, simply outplaying Winter to take the third and fourth games, levelling play at two games apiece in this nail-biting contest.

“I’m very happy with the victory! I played really well out there, and so did Winter. She pulled ahead with a 2-0 lead, but I stayed patient and turned things around for myself. My mental game was great in this thrilling showdown. Though there are still many aspects to reflect on, I’m extremely pleased to take home the win,” said Yidi.

Wang Yidi (Photo WTT)

But momentum would shift once again, with Winter shooting out of the block in the fifth game, Yidi now trailing 1-5 in points. The gap would prove too big for the Chinese player to recover, as Winter hit a fantastic forehand counter-topspin to stun Wang with a 6-11 scoreline.

The match appeared to approach its boiling point, as Winter stormed ahead to hold Championship Point at 9-10 in the sixth, leaving Wang Yidi in a truly desperate position. But the Chinese star held her nerve, producing a mesmerising inside-out forehand loop shot to bring play to a stand-off in deuce.

Profiting from Winter’s service-receive error in the previous point, Wang would then go on to blitz a forehand topspin shot past her opponent to clinch the game, the third seed forcing proceedings to an epic finale on Infinity ∞ Arena.

It went right down to the wire in the deciding game, with Winter initially pulling ahead with a 4-7 advantage, but Wang bagged four points in a row to force a Time-Out call from the German.

“At 4-7 in the decider, we went into a rally and I played a few wonderful shots. To be honest, hesitation crept in at 9-7 for me – I failed to receive her serve, and after that, she completely overpowered with a strike. I had the serve at 9-9. So, I thought of creating a window for myself to attack, or to slow things down a little. Rhythm is key when playing against Winter. Having gone through so many close battles in the past few days, I was able to keep calm at the big moments which was so important in today’s match,” added Yidi

With both players back at the table, a spectacular rally would play out, which eventually enabled Wang to take her fifth consecutive point. Winter spiced things up further, the German star stealing the following two points to draw level at 9-9.

But with the ball in her hand, Yidi served for glory, showcasing nerves of steel to win the match 11-9, taking home her third WTT Champions title in the process.

Truls Moregard pocketed his maiden winner’s trophy, seeing off rising star Sora Matsushima 11-9, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 in

[7
65
post-5536","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-newsbeat","tag-table-tennis
["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard.jpg",1000,660,false
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard-300x198.jpg",300,198,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard-768x507.jpg",640,423,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard.jpg",640,422,false],"1536x1536":["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard.jpg",1000,660,false],"2048x2048":["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard.jpg",1000,660,false
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard-825x575.jpg",825,575,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Truls-Moregard-590x410.jpg",590,410,true
admin
["GET
