Also grabbing gold was Iran’s Abolfazl Zandi in the men’s -58kg, who overcame Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN) Georgii Gurtsiev in the Men’s -58kg final.

Márton had been in imperious form as she aimed to follow in the footsteps of her sister Luana, who had won gold in the -67kg category the day earlier. She did not lose a round on her way to the final, including a quarter-final victory against AIN Liliia Khuzina, the defending champion, and a semi-final win against Chen.

In the gold medal match, Márton had looked set to take the first round having led throughout, but Wafa stayed in the contest and in closing seconds produced a brilliant body kick to tie at 7-7 and win it on connections.

Wafa was crowned world junior champion in Chuncheon last year, and she added a senior title to it with a performance of great maturity in the second round.
