Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir out-sprinted world record holder Tigst Assefa down the finish straight, finishing in 2:24:43 – two seconds ahead of her Ethiopian rival – to win the world championships marathon gold last month in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The duo will once again be up against each other, but not in another race, but for the Women\u2019s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year by World Athletics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Jepchirchir and Assefa are in the shortlist of five elite athletes nominated for the annual award, schedule to take place at the end of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The win in Tokyo was Jepchirchir, fifth global title, including the gold the won at the previous Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Assefa, whose 2:15:50 at the London Marathon in April stands as the world lead and women’s only world record, wil also relish her chances to win the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sydney Marathon winner Sifan Hasan of the Netherlands, who was third in London, has also been nominated together with Kenyan Agnes Ngetich, the world 10km women only record holder. Ngetich is also holds the Half marathon world lead with third-fastest performance of all time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last nominee is double world walk champion in the 20km and 35km, who has been unbeaten this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The nominees for the Men\u2019s Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year include Brazilian Caio Bonfim, the reigning world 20km race walk world champion, who is also the world world 35km race walk silver medallist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Canadian Evan Dunfee, who is the world 35km race walk champion, is also the current world 35km race walk record and area 20km race walk record holder, is another nominee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, the third nominee, is the current world 5km leader with the sixth-fastest performance in history. He is also the world 10km leader with second-fastest performance in history<\/p>\n\n\n\n
London and Berlin Marathon winner Sabastian Sawe and world marathon champion Alphonce Simbu of Tanzania are the other nominees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The vote to determine the Out of Stadium Athlete of the Year finalists is now open on World Athletics social media platforms \u2013 on Facebook<\/a>, Instagram<\/a> and X<\/a>.
