It was only mind games today so I just told myself ‘be calm and do my best.”

Calm he was at full draw and aim – Haney was the only compound male archer to use an index finger release today, compatriot also Hazal Burun used it in women – but he roared once he dropped his 14th 10 against Denmark’s Fullerton to seal the tie, going straight to his coach Mehmet Ejder Sozen.

The pair shared a long, warming embrace and Sozen – a former medical member of team Türkiye – shed tears with national technical director and head coach Yusuf Goktug Ergin as the national anthem played out at Nanjing Olympic Museum.

During a recent period in which recurver Mete Gazoz has long dominated the headlines, now too Türkiye has the compound superstar they’ve been looking for since Elmaagacli left the scene.

“It all started in Antalya 2024 last year because I was fourth place, I was so close but I couldn’t make it in Antalya. I took my lessons, I did my homework all year and I prepared myself for better for this season,” he replied on why he was able to gain his first pieces of World Cup ware in 2025.

Individually speaking, Haney is only one off Elmaagacli’s decorated World Cup tally of four medals [including his gold in the Mexico City 2015 and silver in Samsun 2018 Finals] and at 24, he has plenty of time to overtake that haul on the international premier circuit.

Haney’s heights however came at the expense of the unfortunate Fullerton, who like in the final at 5.18 Democracy Square in Gwangju, came unstuck by one point in Nanjing.

Accumulating 148 and 13 10s [eight Xs] is of course nothing to be ashamed of and the European Field champion acknowledges that although the number of golds may not be what he’d like in 2025 outdoors, he is proud of putting together one of his finest seasons to date.

“I have shot really good these past three weeks. I got second at Worlds, then I won European Field Championships, and then I got to go second here so it’s not too bad,” said the 15-arrow match world record holder. “I will say, though, big difference I think I was a lot more calm here than I was at World Championships.”

“I did some small mental changes and did some new stuff in training that I’m excited to work more on so I’m just straight home on a flight tomorrow and then straight to indoor season, which I can’t wait. I like outdoors and I do good outdoors, but my heart is indoors.“

Final ranking: Compound men

<img
