It was a historic moment: Chile’s first-ever grand prix gold medal. After her narrow miss in China, this time Vargas Ley was flawless, focused and determined.

The women’s -57 kg final block offered a spectacular conclusion with daring throws and unexpected twists. France dominated the category, setting up a thrilling all-French final between two judokas who know each other intimately.

Amandine Buchard, stepping up from her usual -52 kg division, impressed with sharp tactical vision and her trademark kata-guruma, while Faiza Mokdar demonstrated control, confidence and patience throughout the day.

Buchard struck first with a well-executed kata-guruma to score yuko, reminding everyone of her signature move. Yet as Mokdar applied sustained pressure,

Buchard picked up two penalties midway through the contest, putting her on the edge. Mokdar’s strategy became evident: force a third shido.

The plan worked. Buchard was penalised again, giving Mokdar the victory and the gold medal for France. It was a fine performance from Mokdar and an impressive silver for Buchard in her first appearance at -57 kg.

The women’s -52 kg gold medal contest promised fireworks, with an all-Brazilian clash between Gabriela Conceicao and Jessica Pereira, two judokas in top form, showcasing the remarkable strength of Brazil in this weight category.

In a final, it was Jessica Pereira who struck first. Launching a long-range ko-uchi-gari, she managed to catch Conceicao off-guard and score a yuko.

Despite Conceicao’s efforts to turn the bout around, Pereira maintained her advantage with tactical precision. The contest ended with Pereira securing the gold medal, confirming Brazil’s supremacy in the category and earning a well-deserved victory over her compatriot.

The men’s -60 kg final saw Izhak Ashpiz of Israel and Ahmad Yusifov of Azerbaijan reaching their first grand prix final after a series of confident and skilful performances throughout the preliminaries.

Izhak Ashpiz showed no signs of nerves as he opened the scoring with a yuko from a well-executed ippon-ko-uchi-gari, using a clever change of direction that caught Ahmad Yusifov by surprise.

As the contest went on, Yusifov began to increase the pressure, coming close to scoring on one occasion, but the Israeli judoka managed to twist out of danger just in time.

Holding firm under pressure, Ashpiz maintained his lead to claim his first-ever grand prix gold medal and a second medal of the day for Israel.

After a series of surprises and strong performances throughout the preliminaries of the men’s -66 kg , two emerging forces, Julien Frascadore of Canada and Valerio Accogli of Italy earned their places in the gold medal contest, each displaying tactical sharpness and physical resilience.

The final unfolded as a balanced and lively contest, with both judoka launching well-timed attacks but without creating any decisive openings.

After four minutes, the scoreboard remained completely empty, no scores, no penalties, a testament to the even nature of the bout.

As the golden score period progressed, fatigue began to show for Frascadore, and the first penalty eventually fell his way after more than three minutes.

A second soon followed, putting the Canadian under increasing pressure. It was then, in a moment of precision and patience, that Valerio Accogli seized his chance, scoring waza-ari to claim the gold medal after a demanding and tactical encounter.

Final Results

Women’s -48 kg

1.
