The heat was won by Haitian Christopher Borzor, who was clocked at 10.42s.

Was the selection of Salin Tort to the championships justified, considering Cambodia has one other younger sprinter with better timings over the distance?

23-year-old Noeb Chanyourong clocked 10.86 at the SEA Games two years ago and his season’s best this year is 11.11.

To put in context, Salin’s time at the World Championships would have seen him finishing second at the Cambodia SEA Games. Not in the men’s, but in the women’s 100m competition behind Singapore’s Shanti Pereira. Shanti recorded a time of 11.41 in Phnom Penh while the SEA Games women’s 100m record was 11.28 set by the indomitable Lydia da Vega of the Philippines back in 1987.

Would it not have been more acceptable for a younger runner to be given the spot at the World Championships?

Noeb, would not have progressed any further than Salin, had he raced in Tokyo. But it would have the right progression if development was the criteria.

At 27, Salin has already reached his peak and chances of him clocking a better time is fighting against mother time.

The selection of Salin looks more like a decision made to reward a veteran runner instead of having a long term plan in place.

This malady is not confined only to Cambodia but had also happened in the past, both in athletics and other sports around the globe.

At the 2023 World University Games, Somali sprinter Nasra Ali Abukar finished the 100m race in a time of 21.81s, a good ten seconds behind the winner.

Video of her performance went viral, revealing her lack of fitness for the competition. This led to widespread criticism online and accusations of nepotism against the sports official who selected her, as she was the niece of the head of the Somali Athletics Federation.

The chairwoman of the federation, Khadijo Aden Dahir, was suspended and faced legal proceedings. The country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports also issued an apology for the embarrassment caused to the nation.

In May 2021, Chinese entrepreneur He Shihia was reported to have bought a stake in the Zibo Cuju football club to ensure hsi overweight son He Shihua could play professionally. Despite the son’s weight and talent, he was added to the team’s roster, and the owner himself also played in matches.

Or how about novice Martin Podhajský, who was offered a spot on the third-tier Czech Football League (ČFL) team, Ústí nad Labem. The catch? His father agreed to donate a substantial 500,000 Kč to the club’s sponsorship fund. His only condition was that his son would play for a mere ten minutes during a match.

Last year, controversy arose over selection of players to represent four teams participating in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) T20 cricket competition.

A number of promising and upcoming players were not selected to represent any of the teams. The controversy intensified after prolific youth player, Adrian Hetmyer, who was one of the players that was surprisingly omitted, blasted yet another century, his 13th century as a teen.

Hetmyer hammered 107, playing for his club in the U17 cricket finals between RHCCC against Albion CC.

Selection process in sports is not always fair. There is always a clash between objective data including speed, strength and results. But there is also the subjective assessment including competitive drive, tenacity and resilience.

And then there is the hidden agenda of rewarding athletes, who had contributed to the sport or those, whom the sports administrators believe need a golden handshake before they retire from the sports.

And this often happens at the expense of sports.

S.T.
