Berta Abellan (Scorpa) retained her TrialGP Women crown on day two of the final round of the FIM Trial World Championship \u2013 the TrialGP of Spain \u2013 at Pobladura de las Regueras and there were titles for Arnau Farr\u00e9 (Sherco) in Trial2 and Abril Montserrat Junque (Beta) in Trial2 Women, but Toni Bou (Montesa) suffered his first overall defeat of the season in TrialGP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bou’s loss came at the hands of his team-mate and compatriot Gabriel Marcelli \u2013 who sewed up second in the series \u2013 to give the large contingent of passionate home fans plenty to cheer about having witnessed Spanish riders sweep all three titles up for grabs this weekend and, as they have done all season, dominate the premier TrialGP class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starting the series’ final day of competition with a strong fifteen-point advantage over Andrea Sofia Rabino (Beta), twenty-six-year-old Abellan and her twenty-year-old Italian rival went head-to-head over the first six sections of the opening race, arriving at the halfway point locked together on one mark each.
A maximum on the manmade section seven, the last before the course headed to the hazards in the river, put Abellan at a serious disadvantage and although she reeled the leader in through the closing sections the damage was done and her total of eight put her two behind Rabino and reduced her title lead to twelve.
Italy’s Alessia Bacchetta came home third on fourteen, one ahead of Alice Minta (Beta) to close to within two points of the British rider in the battle for series bronze as Kaytlyn Adshead finished another mark adrift in fifth.
With one hand on the title she won for the first time last season, Abellan started the second race looking super-strong, only losing her first mark on section four where Minta went clean to move into an early lead. More importantly, Rabino suffered a maximum there, effectively ending her championship challenge.
Abellan went on to complete the race for just an additional mark to sign off in true champion’s style with Minta finishing second on six \u2013 seven ahead of Bacchetta \u2013 to confirm her third-placed ranking with Rabino fourth on fourteen, one in front of Adshead.
“Finally, I have won the title again and I am so, so excited,” said Abellan. “It has been an amazing season.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With a seventeen-point lead at the start of the day, Farr\u00e9 looked to be perfectly positioned to take his first FIM gold medal. However, Trial2 has been incredibly hard to call all season and with so many riders so evenly matched, even the smallest mistake could prove expensive and when the Spaniard slipped to tenth in the opening race on a total of seventeen \u2013 and his main rival George Hemingway (Beta) came home fifth on fourteen \u2013 his advantage was slashed to twelve.
It could have been a lot worse for Farr\u00e9 with Hemingway suffering a maximum two sections from home that put him out of contention for the win \u2013 a result that would have reduced the gap at the top to just three points \u2013 as Britain’s Jack Dance picked up victory on ten. Frenchman Benoit Bincaz (Electric Motion) was second on eleven after winning a tie-break with Billy Green (Scorpa) who led home his fellow British rider Harry Turner (Sherco) in fourth on thirteen.\u00a0
Slipping to his worst overall finish of the season, Farr\u00e9 was tenth again in race two on seventeen marks lost for ninth on the day, but Hemingway was unable to capitalise and four marks in the final three sections took his total to eight that was good enough for fourth, but saw him finish five points behind Farr\u00e9 in the championship chase.
“Wow, what a day,” said Farr\u00e9. “I was suffering from a lot of pressure in the second race and I made some big mistakes, but luckily I had the points advantage. I’m very happy to win this championship, but it has been very difficult.”
Victory in race two \u2013 his first of the season \u2013 on a total of four ensured series bronze for Spain’s Alex Canales (Montesa) with Green taking second on seven on a tie-break with Dance, who claimed the day’s overall win, as Turner came home fifth on ten after winning a tie-break with Italian Francesco Titli (Montesa).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After holding her nerve yesterday to open up an eight-point Trial2 Women series lead, Spain’s Abril Montserrat Junque (Beta) again produced a measured performance to clinch the title with a five-four scorecard seeing her end the day as champion.
In a repeat of yesterday’s result, Czech rider Petra Budinova \u2013 making her first appearance this season \u2013 claimed victory in both races, finishing on six in the opener to win from the Spanish pairing of round one winner Queralt Fontdevila (Beta) who lost eight and Daniela Hernando (Beta) on eleven. Margaux Pena (Electric Motion) from France was fourth on twelve, one ahead of Montserrat Junque.
Budinova completed her clean sweep of the top step of the podium with a score of eight in race two, giving her a two-mark advantage over Hernando who won a tie-break from Britain’s Matilda Arbon (Sherco) \u2013 who led the championship heading into the weekend \u2013 with Montserrat Junque on eleven, one ahead of Pena.
“I’m really, really happy,” said Montserrat Junque. “It’s like a dream has come true.”
The result meant that Hernando also won a tie-break with Arbon for the series silver medal and with just eight points covering the medal positions, Trial2 Women earned the distinction of being the closest-fought class of the entire championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Having dominated the TrialGP class to clinch his twentieth consecutive title at the previous round, Bou started the final day of competition after winning all twelve days staged so far this season with his one race loss \u2013 out of the twenty-four staged \u2013 coming last time out in the Netherlands.
With the title decided, the focus was on the all-Spanish battle for second in the series between Marcelli and Jaime Busto (Beta) and it was Marcelli \u2013 who yesterday overturned a seven-point deficit to Busto to start today with a one-point advantage \u2013 who took the fight to the champion in the opening race.
With the entire field taking maximums on the sequence of huge rock steps that comprised the third section, the two team-mates were inseparable until the seventh where Marcelli needed a dab and Bou went clean. However, when Bou needed two on the following section and Marcelli remained feet-up the advantage swung back in favour of the younger man who soaked up the pressure to clinch a three-mark victory on a total of fourteen.
Britain’s Harry Hemingway (Beta) continued his great run of form in his debut season in the elite class to end the race in third on twenty-two, four clear of Busto and six ahead of Miquel Gelabert (Honda) on the sole electric machine.
Bou got the season’s concluding race under way with a conclusive Super Pole victory, but almost immediately found himself playing catch-up in the Final after Marcelli produced an inspired ride to lose just a single mark on the third section where Bou needed two and everyone else collected maximums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Moving into the Super Final stage leading on one mark with Bou on two, Hemingway on seven and Busto on ten, Marcelli barely put a wheel wrong, but neither did Bou who reeled off six cleans in a row to heap the pressure on his team-mate. Entering the deciding section still on a single mark, a dab by Marcelli was enough to give Bou the race victory on a tie-break, although it was Marcelli who claimed the day’s overall victory \u2013 the second of his career \u2013 and series silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I’m super-happy about the season,” said Marcelli. “It’s been up and down \u2013 a bit like a rollercoaster \u2013 and there has been a lot of pressure today, so this is a great way to end the championship.”\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Busto was third on thirteen after beating Hemingway on a tie-break with Aniol Gelabert continuing to impress on his only appearance this season in fifth on twenty-nine, three clear of Italian veteran Matteo Grattarola (Beta) who ends the year ranked fourth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
