It was a spectacular golfing extravaganza on the second day of the Open Championships at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club as two players matched the all-time scoring record for a men’s major. Australian Lucas Herbert stormed out to the lead with an 8-under 62 and was matched minutes later by Sam Burns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the sizzling round, Herbet now holds a one stroke lead over a trio of players that includes overnight leader Jackson Suber. With rounds of 70 sand 62, he is now at eight-under midway through the championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His 28 (-6) on the front nine ties the lowest nine-hole score in Open Championship history with Denis Durnian way back in 1983.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First-round leader Suber (T2\/-6) is one of 44 players in the field making their Open Championship debut. He finished the day with a solid round of 69.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Suber is tied with World No. 4 Cameron Young and another debutant Ryan Gerard. Young posted a second-consecutive round of 67 and will be looking to improve on his solo-second finish in his Open Championship debut in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gerard is makes his first appearance at the Open Championship after winning the 2025 Barracuda Championship, his lone win in 73 PGA Tour starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Burns (T5\/-5) had started with a poor 73 on the opening day, but his record 62 today puts him just three strokes behind the leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two-time major champion Bryson DeChambeau (T5\/-5) should have finished higher. But he was given a two-stroke penalty on the fifth hole under Rule 8.1 for inadvertently improving the area of his intended swing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the nine players tied at 4-under (T8), three are from England, including Southport, England native Tommy Fleetwood, Matt Wallace and PGA TOUR rookie Alex Fitzpatrick; the last English winner of The Open Championship was Sir Nick Faldo in 1992.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2018 winner at Carnoustie Francesco Molinari (T8\/-4) seeks to become the 28th multiple winner of The Open Championship and first since Ernie Els in 2012; opened with a 67 in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
World No. 1 and 20-time PGA Tour winner Scottie Scheffler (T8\/-4) trails by four in bid to become the first player to successfully defend at The Open since Padraig Harrington (2008)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Six-time major champion Rory McIIroy (T38\/-1) sits seven-back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A week following Scheffler missing the cut at the Gensis Scottish Open for the first time in 78 tournaments since the 2022, Matt Fitzpatrick\u2019s streak of 28 consecutive made cuts came to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
