There will no seeded men\u2019s singles semi-finals at the Singapore Open badminton championships after Frenchmen Alex Lanier took downed the last standing seed Anders Antonssen of Denmark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was also a woeful day for the Malaysians as all three of the men\u2019s doubles pairs and their top ranked mixed doubles pairs, all failing to march into the semi-finals. Last week, three Malaysians men\u2019s doubles pairs had qualified for the Malaysian Masters semi-finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lanier, who played a pivotal role in helping France finish runners-up at the Thomas Cup Finals, came back from a game down to beat Antonsen, the third seed, 14-21, 21-16, 21-14 after a 79-minute battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Both the top two seeds in the singles \u2013 Shi Yuqi of China and Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand failed to make the quarter-finals, with the latter retiring injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lanier will face Indonesian Alwi Farhan in the semi-finals. Twenty-year-old Alwi, who had disposed Yuqi in the second round, was in top form as he defeated Japan\u2019s Kodai Naraoka 21-12, 21-17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second semi-final will see former world champion Loh Kean Yew, representing the hosts, taking on Japan\u2019s Koki Watanabe. Kean Yew grew from strength to strength as he defeated Taiwanese Chi Yu Jen 16-21, 21-6, 21-8 while Watanabe edged out India\u2019s Lakshya Sen 21-19, 15-21, 21-15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the men\u2019s doubles, Malaysian\u2019s Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik is the only top four seed failing to make the semi-finals. The second seeded Malaysian duo were beaten by China\u2019s Liang Weikeng-Wang Chang, seeded three rungs below them, 15-21, 15-21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chinese duo will take on third seeds Fajar Alfian-Muhammad Shohibul Fikri of Indonesia, who defeated Malaysia\u2019s Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin 21-18, 10-21, 21-14, in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India\u2019s fourth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty defeated the third of Malaysian pairs in the quarter-finals. Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai 19-21, 21-17, 21-13. The Indian veterans will take on top seeded Kim Won-ho-Seo Seung-jae in the semi-finals. The top seeds had beaten Japan\u2019s Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi 21-19, 21-18 in their quarter-final tie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was more bad news for the Malaysian\u2019s after third seeds Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei retired from their mixed doubles match against Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Christo of India. Ee Wei picked up a knee injury in the match and was forced to retire while leading 18-16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also out of the mixed double competition, was second seeds Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand, who were beaten 19-21, 23-21, 16-21 by Japan\u2019s Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The women\u2019s singles, unlike the men\u2019s competition, had gone according to script. All the top four seeds \u2013 Korean An Se-young, China\u2019s Wang Zhiyi, Japan\u2019s Akane Yamaguchi \u2013 all making the semi-final cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of the four, only the Korean superstar had progressed without dropping a game. The world number one picked up a clinical 21-17, 21-14 win over Indian veteran P.V. Sindhu in her quarter-final tie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
