World number one Shi Yuqi of China fell to a shocking 16-21, 21-19, 14-21 defeat to Indonesian upstart Alwi Farhan while second ranked Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand retired injured in his match against India\u2019s Lakshya Sen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Twenty-one-year-old Alwi will now take on Japan\u2019s Kodai Naraoka in the quarter-finals while Lakhsya will start off much fresher against another Japanese Koki Watanabe in his last eight tie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also out is fourth seeded Christo Popov of France, who was beaten by Taiwan’s Chi Yu Jen. Yu Jen showed maturity and composure to come back from a first game defeat to win 20-22, 21-19, 23-21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While the men\u2019s top seeds were unceremoniously dumped out of the competition, both the women\u2019s top seeds are through to the quarter-finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Korean ace, An Se-young, was especially in no mood to waste her time exposed the gulf of standards with her rival Sung Shuo Yun of Chinese Taipei, romping home with a one-sided 21-8, 21-6 win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She will take on veteran P.V. Sindhu in the last eight after the Indian shuttler picked up a convincing 21-9, 21-12 win over Japan\u2019s Riko Gunji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Second seeded Wang Zhiyi, the only player to defeat Se-young in recent times, battled past Denmark\u2019s Line Christophersen 21-16, 22-20 in her second round match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Newly crowned Malaysian Masters champion Ratchanok Intanon is also through to the last eight after a clinical 21-10, 21-16 defeat of Japan\u2019s Natsuki Nidaira in her match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There was also a huge upset in the women\u2019s doubles with second seeded Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan beaten 16-21, 19-21 by Thai siblings Benyap Aimsaard-Nuntakarn Aimsaard. Pearly has been out of action since April due to an injury that also saw her missing the Uber Cup finals, and the Singapore Open is he first tournament return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
