Newly crowned Malaysian Masters men\u2019s singles champion Li Shifeng was shown in the exit in the first round of the Singaporean Open badminton championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chinese world number seven, was beaten 17-21, 14-21 by teammate Weng Hongyang in their first meeting in almost two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hongyang crashed out in the first round in Kuala Lumpur last week but will now move on to the second round here to play Frenchman Alex Lanier. Lanier, who was instrumental in helping France finish runners-up at the recent Thomas Cup, edged past Canadian Brian Yang 21-15, 21-19 in his opening match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also through to the next round is China\u2019s top ranked Shi Yuqi, who had withdrawn from both the his last two tournaments. He made a winning start with a jittery 21-17, 21-18 win over Japan\u2019s Kenta Nishimoto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, it was the end of the road for Taiwanese veteran Chou Tien Chen. The fourth seed was beaten 19-21, 16-21 by Japan\u2019s Kodai Naraoka in his opening match.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India\u2019s H.S. Prannoy was another unseeded player to progress as he picked up a hard-earned 10-21, 21-12, 21-18 win over Indonesia\u2019s Jonatan Christie, the fifth seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also shown the exit was eighth seeded Taiwanese Lin Chun-yi. Hong Kong\u2019s Lee Cheuk Yiu, the world No.23 fought back to beat the world number nine, 13-21 21-13 21-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
China\u2019s sixth seeded mixed doubles pairing of Guo Xinwa-Chen Fanghui were send packing out in the first round by Japan\u2019s Yuta Watanabe-Maya Taguchi, who took just 30-minutes to carve out a 21-7, 21-16 win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
