The seven-way tie was the largest since nine players shared the lead in the 1969 PGA Championship at NCR Country Club in Dayton, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could have been eight players on the lead. Garrick Higgo carded a 69, which included a two-shot penalty before he even hit a shot for being 10 seconds late to the tee for his group\u2019s starting time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheffler is seeking to become the third player in the last 25 years to successfully defend his title here, to join Tiger Woods (2006, 2007) and Brooks Koepka (2018, 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheffler took advantage of two long birdie putts and one big break on the 17th hole to share the lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest surprise atop the leaderboard  is probably Kaymer. He had joined LIV Golf in 2022 and has yet to finish in the top 10 in the few DP World Tour events he has played since then. He is No. 1,160 in the world ranking. He hasn\u2019t been in the top 10 after one round of any major since the 2020 PGA Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Masters champion Rory McIlroy bogeyed his last four holes for a 74 that puts him tied-105.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thirty-three players are within two shots of the lead, topping the previous major championship record of 28 at the 1993 Open Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from Scheffler and Kaymer, 10 other former major champions are within two shots of the lead &#8211; Xander Schauffele, Patrick Reed, Shane Lowry, Jason Day,\u00a0 Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Collin Morikawa)\/<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrick Reed (T8\/2) carded the only bogey-free round while Dan Brown (T8\/-2) and Jon Rahm (T15\/-1) are the only players with eagles on par-4s (Rahm on No. 2, Brown on No. 11)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three-time PGA Championship winner Koepka (T15\/-1) opened with a 1-under 69 while 2024 PGA Championship winner Schauffele is at T8\/-2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course record from Lewis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bryce Lewis carded a eight-under 62 set a course record at The Woodcreek Club to take a one-stroke lead at the the Colonial Life Charity Classic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation and leads Zac Blair, who led the field with nine birdies and matched his career-low round with an opening 63 round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Peterson is a further stroke behind while seven players including Carson Young and Jacob Solomon are are tied fourth at five-under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three players went bogey-free Thursday: Trent Phillips (T4\/-5), Cole Hammer (T17\/-3) and Michael Feagles (T17\/-3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two way tie in Peru<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conner Godsey and\u00a0David Pastore\u00a0opened with rounds of 9-under 63 at Los Inkas Golf Club to tie the course record and share the first-round lead at the Peru Open, the third event of the PGA TOUR Americas season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This marks the first time two 63s have been carded in the same year, and the score has been posted nine times by eight players.
