The Chinese women had beaten Japan 3-2 in the women’s team final earlier last night.

Thousands of fans lined the streets of Wembley in eager anticipation of an epic finale, and those fortunate enough to get a ticket would witness a stunning opening chapter between Liang Jingkun and Tomokazu Harimoto.

For all the world, it seemed destined that Japan would claim the first strike as Harimoto threw down the gauntlet, pulling two games clear before later setting up match point at 9-10 in the fourth. However, Jiangkun, who made jaws drop with an audacious comeback bid against Alexis Lebrun in the semifinals, would defy the odds again, saving that match point to force a decider where he’d overturn a staggering 3-8 deficit against Harimoto at the last to win 8-11, 4-11, 11-9, 13-11, 11-8.

Running to his coaching corner in jubilation before lapping up the deafening applause from the adoring fans, Jingkun could hardly contain his excitement, recognising the significance of his win. He now presented superstar teammates Wang Chuqin and Lin Shidong with the opportunity to put the contest to bed quickly.

It wasn’t a done deal yet by any stretch of the imagination with Chuqin stepping up to face an opponent who has caused him trouble in recent months, Sora Matsushima. The 19-year-old Japanese upstaged the World No.1 earlier this year at WTT Champions Chongqing 2026, and he’d give him another good run for his money on Sunday night. But Chuqin held firm, fighting back from a game down to see off Matsushima in four 8-11, 12-10, 11-2, 11-9, moving China one step closer to euphoria.

Shidong now had the chance to write his name down in history. A win for the former World No.1, and he’d be the man to cement China’s title defence. His opponent Shunsuke Togami fought valiantly, doing everything in his power to try to reverse the tide for Japan, but to no avail.

A rocket backhand counter topspin down the line on the final point sealed the deal 11-9, 11-5, 7-11, 11-9, igniting joyous celebrations in the Team China camp. Darting straight for coach Wang Hao, Lin returned to the court where he soaked up the incredible atmosphere at OVO Arena Wembley atop the table, bowing to the crowd in appreciation for the role they played in guiding him, and his teammates, to glory.

“I’m extremely happy to win this hard-earned title. I want to thank my team and my country for continuing to support me after the semifinal loss, encouraging me and giving me confidence again. I also want to thank the CTTA leadership for their continued trust in me after my performance in the semifinal and giving me another chance to play in the final. It’s a huge honour for me regardless of which position I played in the line-up. To finish the Championship with such a perfect result makes me very happy,” said Shidong.

China’s reign as the dominant force at the summit of the world order continues. The team’s record title haul extends to 24 gold medals in the men’s discipline, lifting the iconic Swaythling Cup twice as many times as the next most successful team, doubling Hungary’s count of 12.

With the women’s team also emerging triumphant, this marks the seventh consecutive ITTF World Team Championships where China has locked up both gold medals, strengthening its grip on table tennis’ most prestigious team hardware.

[7
65
post-12755","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-newsbeat","tag-table-tennis
["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a.jpg",1920,1080,false
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-300x169.jpg",300,169,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-768x432.jpg",640,360,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-1024x576.jpg",640,360,true],"1536x1536":["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-1536x864.jpg",1536,864,true],"2048x2048":["https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a.jpg",1920,1080,false
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-825x575.jpg",825,575,true
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a-590x410.jpg",590,410,true
admin
https://www.infinitysport.asia/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/Team-China-CHN_WTTTC-London-2026_KO-Day-7_1-3-copy_0fb6e0b7-315f-4497-b7de-e23d29a5363a.jpg
["GET
