It was a mixed day for hosts China in the beach handball competition at the Sanya Asian Beach Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chinese squad were beaten by Bahrain in their opening match but bounced back to defeat Sri Lanka in the second match to keep their hopes of qualifying to the knockout stages from Group A alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the match against Bahrain, China lost the first period 14-8 but despite a strong comeback in the second period, they could not stop Bahrain from edging ahead 15-14 and seal victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ma Huifeng top scored for the hosts with 14 points with Bilal Askani, the best for Bahrain with 11 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Against Sri Lanka, China were dominant, winning the first period 18-8 and the second 20-8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Huifeng, was again the topscorer with 16 points while Pang Jiaming reached double digits with 10 points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thailand and Qatar top Group B with two wins each. Thailand defeated both Jordan and Mongolia to lead on points difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Qatar had defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh to open their campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The match between Maldives and Bangladesh was the only tie that went into the shootout. Maldives, lost the opening period 12-21 but came back strongly to take a slim 23-22 win in the second period to force the shootout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maldives upped the tempo in the shootout to win 7-4 to clinch the victory. Naeem Shamnooz Mohamed topscored for Maldives with 14 points with teammate Adam Fathuhulla picking up 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Beach handball competition, was the only sport to start ahead of the opening ceremony of the Games tomorrow. Apart from the opening ceremony, the waterpolo competition also starts tomorrow with the women’s category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
