But that was enough to see him finish at at 12-under 276 and take the title one stroke ahead of Scheffler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The victory game McIlroy his 30th victory on the PGA TOUR, and his sixth major championship. The 36-year-old is also the first player to successfully defend a title on the PGA TOUR this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheffler, the world&#8217;s No. 1 player, recorded the largest 36-hole comeback in history. He was 12 behind going into the weekend. It was his third runner-up finishi in the majors to go along with four titles. His 65-68 weekend made him the first player since 1942 to go bogey-free on the weekend at Augusta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scheffler got within two shots of McIlroy after birdies on Nos. 15 and 16, but was unable to get any closer as McIlroy closed out the one-shot victory despite the bogey on the 72nd hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four players finished a further stroke behind at 10-under &#8211; Tyrrell Hatton, Russell Henley, Justin Rose and Cameron Young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rose had a two-shot lead that evaporated around Amen Corner with two bogeys and a three-putt par. He couldn&#8217;t make up enough ground the rest of the way and had to settle for a third close call at the Masters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Young lost his two-shot lead much earlier with a long three-putt bogey on the par-3 sixth and taking bogey on the next hole when he hit wedge from the fairway into a bunker. One shot behind going to the back nine, Young closed with nine straight pars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hatton carded a final-round 66, his career low round at the Masters to record his best result at Augusta National and best result in any major championship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Henley, who celebrated his 37th birthday on Sunday, he also recorded best finish in a major championship. His previous best was a tied-fourth at the Masters three years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the champion McIlroy, who is already exempt into all Signature Events and majors this season, is now also exempted into the Masters and PGA Championship for life, and The Open Championship through his age-60 season of 2049.
