Despite their second loss, Jordan can still hope to make the knockout stage cut but will have to beat Uzbekistan in their final tie to stand a chance.

In Group C, Australia moved within touching distance of the quarter-finals following a 5-0 victory over India at the Pathum Thani Stadium.

Korea, the two-time champions, with consecutive wins, will close their group stage campaign against North Korea on Wednesday. Despite their second loss, Jordan can still hope to make the knockout stage cut but will have to beat Uzbekistan in their final tie to stand a chance.

Jordan did well to weather the Korean onslaught in the opening 20 minutes as their opponents struggled to find their rhythm – both Lee Hae-un and Yoon Ah-yeong fluffed their attempts while Choi Ju-hong found the target but fired straight at keeper Sajida Issa.

Taking advantage of an injury to Cho Hye-young, the West Asian side made their first foray into their opponents’ 18-yard box in the 25th minute, but forwards Dana Abu Hazeem and Yasmeen Al Zurikat failed to coordinate their attack and came away empty-handed.

Parity was restored when the similarly-named Lee Hae-un stepped in for Cho, and Korea took the lead in the 41st minute when Jin Hye-rin, brilliantly set up by Kim Min-seo in the area, drilled her shot into the bottom left past a rooted Issa.

They doubled their advantage just two minutes later when Issa, in deflecting Hae-un’s cross, pushed the ball into substitute Lee’s path, who punished the keeper by volleying into the top left corner.

Issa then did well to tip Kim Min-seo’s stinging shot onto the crossbar before Choi Ju-hong hit the woodwork to close a first half that only came alive towards the end.

Korea again went on the attack after the break, but Jordan stunned them by pulling one back in the 51st minute when an unchecked Al Zurikat got to the ball before keeper Kim Chae-been and nodded home a lovely floated cross from the right flank by Rama Al Khashook.

As a resurgent Jordan looked to level the scoreline, the East Asian side redoubled their efforts, with Issa saving a 18-yard strike from Park Ju-ha in the 71st minute and denying a similar shot moments later from Park Ga-yun.

A well-timed tackle by defender Sara Ra inside the area in the 80th minute prevented Kim Min-seo from a third Korean goal before the midfielder closed the match with a thunderous shot that struck the left post, bounced off Issa and went out of play.

A hat-trick from Skye Hamarick and further strikes from Danella Brutus and Daisy Brown saw Australia notch their second straight win, with Japan their opponents in their final group stage fixture on Wednesday.

India still have a chance to progress despite two defeats but will have to beat Chinese Taipei.

Both Australia and India tested the waters early on with tentative forays into the opposition half, with Australia carving out the better opportunity in the 10th minute as Butrus manoeuvred her way past the Indian backline but lost control inside the box, allowing the ball to roll out of play.

India too had a chance to go ahead in the 20th minute when Anju Chanu struck a free-kick from distance, but her effort sailed just over the crossbar.

Australia began to assert control in the minutes that followed, with Shelby McMahon coming closest after an end-to-end solo run that left several Indian players trailing, before the danger was eventually cleared by Bhumika Khumukcham.

The Young Matildas’ persistence came to fruition in the 39th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Cindy Colney fouled Butrus inside the box, which Halmarick stepped up to take, coolly sending the ball into the bottom right corner.

Just a minute later, the number nine doubled the advantage, meeting Peta Trimis’s cross from the right with a precise header past Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem.

The Australians wasted no time after the break as Avaani Prakash slipped a short pass to Halmarick from outside the box, allowing the Sydney FC forward to complete her hat-trick in the 48th minute with a curling effort into the top left corner.

A fourth for the 2024 semi-finalists followed shortly after as Butrus won the ball off Chanu before beating three Indian defenders and a helpless Monalisha Devi at the goal to find the back of the net shortly before the hour-mark.

India were spared further damage soon after thanks to quick thinking from Shruti Kumari, who rushed to clear Halmarick’s effort from inside the box after it had been left unattended.

The South Asians spent much of the remaining minutes warding off waves of attacks, with repeated charges from the likes of Trimis and Prakash, with the former coming dangerously close in the 70th minute, but her right-footed effort was denied by Moirangthem between the sticks.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, India’s Lhingdeikim surged forward onto Sibani Devi’s pass but was denied by defender Amelia Bennett inside the box, only for Australia to net again in the dying minutes thanks to Brown’s effort from inside the box.

Korea almost surely confirmed
