Ngan Thi Van Su struck both goals as Vietnam edged India 2-1 in their AFC Women\u2019s Asian Cup Group C tie at the Perth Rectangular Stadium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier today, Japan worked hard to secure a 2-0 win over Chinese Taipei in their Group C opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Frustrated for long periods by resolute Chinese Taipei defending, second half goals from Momoko Tanikawa and Kiko Seike took them over the line as they kicked off their campaign for a third title with three points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chinese Taipei opted for a five-strong defence with Su Yu-Hsuan – their leading scorer in the Qualifiers – on the bench, while Tanikawa, Mina Tanaka and Maika Hamano formed a three-pronged attack for Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hamano proved a handful for Chinese Taipei from the start with the Tottenham Hotspur forward pushing down the left before cutting the ball back for Tanikawa, whose shot was cleared away by Su Sin-Yun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wang Yu-Ting was let off the hook in the 10th minute, initially saving Aoba Fujino’s curling effort from outside the box before seeing Tanikawa finding space inside the box with the midfielder\u2019s low shot beating the Chinese Taipei custodian but not the left post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nils Nielsen\u2019s Japan wasted another chance with Hamano angling her header wide in the 32nd minute off Hikaru Kitagawa\u2019s cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Japan almost found a way through in the 44th minute when Tanaka\u2019s cross was deflected into the path of goal by Hsu Yi-Yun but an alert Wang scrambled the ball off the line with Prasobchoke Chokemor\u2019s side then heaving a sigh of relief when Tanikawa placed her header off Hamano\u2019s cross into the box wide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite maintaining a deep defensive block in the second half, Chinese Taipei continued to be vulnerable, with Tanaka pulling her headed attempt just wide in the 51st minute before the FC Rosengard midfielder was denied from close range by Wang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Japan\u2019s persistence finally saw them opening the scoring in the 61st minute when Hana Takahashi sent a looping cross into the box for Tanikawa, who chested the ball, turned past her marker and tucked the ball into the back of the net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boosted by the goal, Japan pressed forward in search of more and their efforts came to fruition in the second minute of added time with Seike powering home a header from Remina Chiba\u2019s cross to seal the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, India thought they had salvaged a point after Sanfida Nongrum came off the bench to draw them level but Van Su struck in the fourth minute of second half added time to steal the points at the very end for Vietnam.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vietnam signalled their intent inside the opening minute with Van Su firing wide from distance while at the other end, India tested keeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh seven minutes later through Sangita Basfore\u2019s low drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Southeast Asian side\u2019s high press almost gave them the lead in the 14th minute when Nguyen Thi B\u00edch Thuy beat the offside trap before rattling the woodwork from distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Panthoi Chanu Elangbam was put to the test again a minute later, repelling Huynh Nhu\u2019s shot from inside the area before the India custodian was forced to come off her line to challenge an onrushing Nguyen Th\u1ecb Bich Thuy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vietnam\u2019s sustained pressure bore fruit at the half-hour mark after India failed to deal with Thai Thi Thao\u2019s cross into the box, allowing Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy to tee-up Van Su to finish with a curling effort over Panthoi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India nearly drew level in the 41st minute after Pyari Xaxa capitalised on a fumble by Vietnam keeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh but her attempt sailed over the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vietnam thought they had doubled their advantage in the 48th minute after Thai Thi Thao netted from close range, only for her effort to be ruled offside following a VAR review. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two minutes later, India drew level, Duong Thi Van cut Pyari\u2019s run in the centre but her clearance landed nicely for substitute Sanfida Nongrum whose looping shot saw the ball clip Tran Thi Kim Thanh\u2019s gloves before settling in the back of the net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A buoyant India threatened to go ahead through Pyari and Sanfida while at the other end, Panthoi had to be sharp to deny Van Su from inside the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Van Su, however, was not to be denied glory as she capitalised after India failed to clear Vu Thi Hoa\u2019s cross, with the midfielder producing a sublime finish to seal the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
