Vietnam U-14 tennis team
Vietnam and the Philippines advanced from the ATF Asia Under-14 Development Championships regional competition that concluded yesterday at the Morodok Tennis Complex into the Finals next year.
Vietnam’s boys domination and the girls competitiveness saw them topping the final points standings with ease.
The standing of each nation was based on the best three individual results in singles and the best three individual results in doubles, combined for both tournaments.
Vietnam ended with 2,050 points ahead of the Philippines, who were a distant second with 1,680 points.
Le Phu Gia was the star in the Vietnamese teams qualification, winning the boy’s singles title on both weeks as well as teaming up for the doubles double with Vu Tuan Phong.
Their girls were making the semi-finals in the singles, but were more dominant in the doubles. Nguyen Linh Nhi-To Bien Nhieh won the girls doubles titles on both week.

The Philippines’ qualification was mostly on the performance of their pint-sized powerhouse Maristella Torrecampo. Making her final appearance at the championships, Marstella won the singles titles with consummate ease. She defeated Mongolia’s Aissata Enkhzaya Adama in the Week 1 final and Singapore’s Wang Zixi in the Week Two final.
She and teammate Ella Mhae Paglalunan were semi-finalists in the doubles.
Hosts Cambodia finished tenth ahead of Timor Leste and Brunei in the 12 nation competition.
Singapore, despite coming into the tournament with their players being seeded tops, fell short of their potential. despite having representatives in several finals, they were unable to convert that into wins. The island nation finished third and missed the qualification cut by 280 points.
