Newly crowned world champion Luana Marton of Hungary is a winner once again.
Marton rose to the top of the podium once again after beating China’s Jiani Xing for the -67kg division gold medal at the World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships in Malabo.
The victory comes just over a week after she claimed the world title, defeating Brazilian Milena Titoneli in Wuxi.
The World Taekwondo Women’s Open Championships got underway yesterday with thrilling action across three weight categories, marking a historic milestone as Equatorial Guinea welcomed its first-ever World Taekwondo-promoted event.
This second edition of the championships brought together 188 female athletes from 35 countries plus The Refugee Team, Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) and World Taekwondo all competing for glory on African soil.
With Marton in imperious form, the bronze medals went to Spain’s World Championships bronze medallist Lena Moreno Reyes and Côte d’Ivoire’s Olympic bronze medallist Ruth Gbagbi.
In the -53kg category, China’s Xiaolu Wang delivered a commanding performance to claim the gold medal, defeating Great Britain’s Jodie Mckew 2:1 in the final.
The bronze medals were secured by neutral athlete Aziza Guseinova and Hye Young Ahn of Korea.
The day’s final category, the -73kg division, produced a thrilling gold medal match as neutral athlete Anastasiia Kosmycheva claimed a 2:1 victory against Spain’s Helena García Suárez.
Spain celebrated another podium finish as Belen Moran Romero earned bronze, while Croatia’s Doris Pole also stepped onto the podium with a bronze medal of her own.
The championships continue today with competition in the -49kg and -57kg categories.
