The United States have claimed an historic FIM Enduro Vintage Trophy (EVT) victory at the tenth edition of the race in Zschopau, Germany.
Entering the fourth and final day of racing as favourites to win this year’s Vintage Veterans Trophy, the United States did not disappoint. Putting the finishing touches to what has been a near-perfect week, the trio of Fred Hoess (Husqvarna), Billy Burns (Can-Am) and Terry Cunningham (Husqvarna) were rewarded with their first-ever FIM EVT win.
“It’s been an incredible week,” said Hoess at the end of the Final Cross Test in Zschopau. “We’ve really come together as a team to get this result. Thank you to everyone for the support.
“Overall, it’s been a brilliant, but tough, event. They say Zschopau is the motorcycle city, and definitely, it’s been a spectacular place to race!”
For Austria, any opportunity to capitalise on a mistake from the United States on Day Four never materialised. Nevertheless, they still had plenty of reasons to celebrate, ending their week as vice-champions. Thanks to their strong performances on Day Three and Day Four, Italy were able to complete the podium in third overall.
As the outgoing champions of the FIM EVT, Germany were unable to secure the podium result on home soil that they had initially hoped for. Fighting until the end, they finished a commendable fourth overall. The Czech Republic completed the top five.
The fourth and final day of racing saw the United States’ Fred Hoess (Husqvarna) cap off a great week of racing by winning the Final Cross Test in the Vintage Veterans Trophy individual classification. Hoess led home Bernhard Walzer (KTM) in second, with Italy’s Tullio Pellegrinelli (Puch-Frigerio) third.
Crossing the finish line of the Final Cross Test, Vintage Silver Vase Italia were quick to celebrate their overall victory in the Vintage Silver Vase category. From start to finish in Zschopau, Stefano Bosco (Kramer), Federico Fregnan (Fantic Motor) and Giuseppe Gallino (Puch) proved the team to beat, and won by a very comfortable two-minutes-and-forty-seconds.
Although unable to reel their rivals in, Silver Vase 17 Kramer Werkxx could be pleased with their efforts in the FIM EVT, and secured the runner-up result. With the battle for the final step of the podium coming down to the wire, MC Simson Suhl claimed third by just four seconds over MC Scuderia Norelli in fourth. Silver Vase Germany 1 rounded out the top five.
Putting the finishing touches to a great ride in Zschopau, Italy’s Giuseppe Gallino (Puch) won the Vintage Silver Vase Final Cross Test on Day Four. Frank Philippaerts (Maico) followed him home for second, with Andrea Rastrelli (MZ) third, to ensure an Italian one-two-three on the day.
Celebrations for Italy continued in the Vintage Club Team class, with Tagliamento 1 securing the overall win. After leading the category throughout the entire FIM EVT, Tagliamento 1 did not put a foot wrong on the final day of racing, winning by over three minutes.
Germany filled out the remainder of the podium, thanks to Club Team Germany 12 and Club Team Germany 2 finishing second and third overall, respectively. A late change to the top five saw MSC Mauer move past the U.S. Leonessa D’Italia 1903 to claim fourth, pushing their rivals back to fifth.
The Final Cross Test saw Italy’s Mario Graziani (Maico) take the win in the Vintage Club Team individual classification, ahead of The Netherlands’ Anton van de Wetering (Maico) in second, with the Czech Republic’s Petr Dokoupil (KTM) third.
The Czech Republic’s Pavel Koncicky (KTM) topped the Vintage Individual standings on Day Four. He finished just one second clear of Great Britain’s Matt Yates (Husqvarna) in second, with Italy’s Michele Brezzaro (Maico) third.
The FIM EVT will now be the turn of Považská Bystrica in Slovakia to host next, from 25 August to 29 August 2027.
