Yin Yiqing
Reigning Asian junior badminton champion Yin Yiqing of China has retained the title in commanding style at the Yatsushiro City General Gymnasium in Kyushu, Japan.
Yiqing took just 31-minutes to overcome compatriot Zhang Yixin 21-17, 21-15 in the girls singles final. With the win, she emulates fellow Chinese star Hu Ting, who also won back-to-back titles in 1998 and 1999.
China also bagged the boys singles crown after Hong Tianyue upstaged Indonesian Fardhan Rainanda Jow 21-18, 21-19 in the final.
Despite clinching two titles, it was the worst outing for the Chinese shuttlers since 2019. Chinese players had won four of the five titles at stake last year and made a clean sweep in the 2024 edition.
Their hopes of winning a third title was earlier dashed by Malaysia’s Ahmad Redzuan-Low Zi Yu in the mixed doubles final. The duo became the first Malaysians since Tan Wee Kiong-Woon Khe Wei in 2007, to win the title defeating Zheng Weigang-Li Menghan 21-15, 22-20.
Japan and Chinese Taipei shared the spoils in the remaining doubles events.
Second seeds Aoi Banno-Yuzu Ueno defeated teammates Ria Haga-Rio Yamakita 21-13, 9-21, 23-21 in all-Japanese girls doubles final.
The boys doubles final was an all-Taiwanese match up between fifth seeds Chen Ping Hsuan-Lee Wei Ting and Huang Tzu-Yuan-Lin Sheng-Ming. It was the unseeded pair that prevailed winning 21-10, 21-13and lift the title.
